FWIW, a lot of the movies I'm seeing mentioned in this thread are not acclaimed, just the typical BS Hollywood puts out and is forgotten in a year or two.
As far as Red Dawn goes, its far from acclaimed or a great movie. However, it is a fun, entertaining film that I rarely pass up when I see it on.
Pearl Harbor - Mixing the Doolittle Raid, Fighter pilots flying bombers, etc. Great special effects, too bad there was no story to go with them.
Well it did have Kate Beckinsale. Oh, you mentioned the special effects already! :tongueout: Actually, when I saw it, my first thought was that if the Japanese had dropped as much ordinance as the movie depicted, they would have obliterated the entire harbor.
Remains of the Day. When it was over, I looked at my wife and asked, "Is that all there is?"
Thin Red Line. How you can make Guadalcanal boring, and depict Marines daydreaming about swimming while pinned down by enemy fire is beyond me. It's the only movie I ever really wanted to walk out of. I stayed because I thought my wife liked it. Later, I found out she stayed because she thought I did.

Any movie that is written for the mouth-breathing American contingent, feels the need to explain its storyline, has a feelgood ending and/or an ending that is so obviously a redemptive theme that I want to vomit.
That's damn near every movie that's "acclaimed" these days.
Titanic - dear God, how many errors can we make here? How many times to we have to see just how flawed the wealthy are, and how morally superior the sprawling masses are in comparison? Rich people ALWAYS get furious and shoot at people when their wimmins is stolen. And I could go on and on.
Any of the Spiderman movies...puh-lease. Can you say predictable?
Pearl Harbor - Hey, lookie! A war breaks out during a love story!
The English Patient - can you say painfully dull? Oh, we're so tortured...
Babel - one caveat: whatever that old lady was smokin, I want some. Other than that...Jesus, Brad, could you wring your hands and look like a girl any more?
Gangs of New York - oh, man, where to start on this one? Nevermind, i just won't get started.
Lord of the Rings Trilogy - in the beginning, there were movies where manly men (and half-men) lopped up ogres and critters and basically kicked ass wherever they went. Then, somewhere in the third movie, they all became tortured metro-style wimps who cast longing, half-homosexual glances at each other over the heart-wrenching perplexities of what to have for dinner. Bah.
Any of the "new" Star Wars movies - dude, you're gonna be a bad guy. You're fated to be the bad guy. Revel in it. Get the list "When I Become An Evil Overlord" from the internet and live by it. And dammit, get a scriptwriter who has a pulse and an acting coach who has acted. Wooden doesn't begin to describe it.
A Beautiful Mind - why, oh why, would you even consider letting your quite obviously mentally disturbed husband stay alone with an infant, you stupid twit? Even Jennifer Connelly's lovely blue eyes couldn't save this dog of a movie.
And on and on and on...I'm pretty jealous of my time, and wasting it on lame movies designed to pander to the masses just pisses me off. That being said, I occasionally enjoy a good romp with a totally worthless movie like "Hostel"...mainly because it doesn't pander to the masses, doesn't pretend to have a deep story (or subplot, or even a plot for that matter). It's just 90 minutes of squealing nastiness and someone in the room yelling, "Why the HELL did you do THAT, you IDIOT?!"
I have to disagree about "No Country", though. Didn't explain itself, obviously wasn't written for the Wal-Mart crowd, and had an ending that was more true to life than usual. Kinda like "O Brother Where Art Thou?" It didn't always make sense, because life rarely does.

Two priests giving their very lives to free a little girl from her torment seems pretty pro Christian to me.
Nope, the demon never obeyed the orders of the priest's. Never once can you find in the bible where demons failed to instantly obey orders to leave a possessed person, when the exorcist had the correct authority to speak with the authoruty of Christ.
The deaths of several people at the hands of the demon.
The suicide of a priest.
The prolonged suffering of the child and her family.
The failure of the Church to exorcise the demon.
Remember, it only left the girl of its own free will, when it was invited to leave and enter a different host.
It is STILL free to re-enter the child if it wants to. And, if you know anything about scripture, free to bring 7 worse demons with it. See Matthew 12:44
No, this movie is certainly not pro Bible or pro Christian belief.

I agree. Capt. Miller was a very bad officer. He got most of his men killed needlessly. Chiefly by being a friend more than their commander.
Also, I could never accept the idea that a Captain would be in charge of a platoon or in this case just a squad of men.
A Company Commander, as Miller most certainly would have been with his experience and rank, would not be assigned a search and rescue mission.
Maybe if he had been a Lieutenant, but not a Captain.
If he had been a Lt., then it would have been more believable for him to be such friends with a squad NCO like Sgt Horvath.
The Godfather movies... Seriously, if you like these movies you are either a total sheep, or a total mental deficient...
I partially agree.
The Godfather is a near perfect movie. Possibly the best American film made to date.
Godfather II suffers from trying too hard to recapture what worked in The Godfather.
The main problem is Al Pacino is no Marlon Brando, and cannot carry a film the way Brando could and did to perfection in The Godfather.
To the film makers credit though, they did show how Michael was trying to hang onto the life style his father created, but in a shallow manner which you could see through.
It had the trappings but not the heart of the first film.
Also, a very poor casting job. Troy Donahue? Give me a break. Connie would have seeked father figures, not effiminate hand kissers.
The Godfather on the other hand had excellent secondary roles and actors.
Richard Castellano as Clemenza.
Abe Vigoda as Tessio.
Richard Conte as Barzini.
To name but three who were perfect in this movie.
And Robert Di Nero? Very poor casting IMO. He is great in many roles, but in this one, he was as stiff as over cooked pasta.
Godfather III. Forget about it, I pretend it was never made.

Thanks for the spoiler you idiot.
Napoleon Dynamite (boring and completely unfunny)
Titanic (suckage on a truly epic scale)
Little Miss Sunshine (don't get why it won all those awards, snoozeworthy)
Lord of the Rings. Never got into that kind of stuff. Although I did kind of like the last one of the three.
Hobbits are just too goofy.

brokeback mountain, not that theres anyhing wrong with that...
Any movie with Meryl Streep.
Any movie with Wil Ferrel (however you spell his name!)
The King & I. (Yul Brenner couldn't act his way out of a paper sack. He owned the rights to The Magnificient Seven and he was even rotten in that!)
The movie otherwise, was pretty good.

The Horse Whisperer.
Flame away, I don't care...it's "Pulp Fiction" for me. "Reservoir Dogs" is much better.
Oh yeah, let's not forget The Pianist WTF was that all about?
Blood Diamond
There have been a lot of "greatest movies of all time" that I thought were just terrible, but that's the one that comes to mind at the moment. Saving Private Ryan was another.

The Godfather - now it's not at the "dookie" level, but I just can't get interested in it. I've seen parts of - Caan getting whacked, and Pacino whacking everyone, but I just get bored after a while.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
The Graduate
Paper Moon
Annie Hall
Natural Born Killers - is the only movie I ever rented then turned off and never made it through.
The Sting - I walked out of the theater I was so bored. I walked out on it a second time. I finally made it through years later and determined I was correct the first two times.
Anything with - Bill Murry, Chevy Chase, Martin Short, Will Farrell or Jim Carey.

Also, I could never accept the idea that a Captain would be in charge of a platoon or in this case just a squad of men.
In rifle company's after a couple months of combat, it was rare for a captain to be in charge. Usually lieutenants moved up from platoon.

You could be right! If I only ever watched bad movies... but enjoyed them, I would have inheretley bad taste no matter what I ever watched.
Yeah, that's the ticket.
Could be worse dude, you could have inherently bad taste in women and booze.
Office space :couch:
Oh it's on now.
I HATED "Gone With The Wind."
I watched about twenty minutes of the first "Lord of the Rings" movies, got up, and left the theater. I just don't enjoy fantasy. I'm sure they are great movies but that's just not the type of movie that I like.
Same with Harry Potter. I didn't even try to watch one of those. I was bored with the trailers.

My wife and I watched our way through the American Film Institute's top one hundred films. Most of them had some redeeming quality that justified its place. The one that left both Mrs. thetoastmaster and I scratching our heads was Midnight Cowboy. As far as I am concerned, that film is of no worth, either as entertainment or social commentary.
There are many other movies that I don't care for, but few of them are acclaimed or lauded by anyone through puberty.

-The Constant Gardner
-That stupid movie that had Daniel Day Lewis playing some environmental wacko who had a creepy relationship with his daughter. Huge at the Oscars, big suckage.
-Titanic. Technically brilliant. Crappy movie.
-Casablanca. Fell asleep about 1/2 hour into it.
-The Deer Hunter - Group of my favorite actors, but couldn't get into it.
-Midnight Cowboy - WTF?
-Citizen Kane-AFI's greatest movie of all time? Whatever.
There have been more, but these were the first to come to mind.

The Passion Of The Christ. It needed to be better just to be bad. HH
Dances with Wolves, utter crap!
That goes for anything Costner does though.
I like where he runs off with Jane Fonda!

Hmm. Interesting perspective.
I don't mean to beat it to death, but I saw the Exorcist as loosely referencing Mark... the evil calling itself "Legion" (possibly your 7 demons already dug in), and calling the girl giving it refuge a "piglet" and a "sow". Even Christ didn't instantly compel Legion out. Karras' hiccup of faith, even after all he'd seen, forced him to improvise. Just substitute the stairs for the Sea of Galilee.
Mark 5:8-13, also Luke 8:30-33
To each his own, I guess. I happen to love Pulp Fiction.

***SPOILER ALERT***
This weekend, on a plane trip between Munich and Chicago, I finally saw "No Country for Old Men," and I was rather disappointed.
It's well made, and well acted, but it just ends. There's no resolution. The psycho kills his way through the movie, and walks away at the end. The Sheriff decides he's looked to long into the abyss, and it is time to retire.
Nothing has changed at the end of the movie, except that a lot of people are dead.
Yes, a good movie, technically, but rather a let-down.

For example....
Lord Of The Rings.
Started out ok but by the end I really wanted to see that little hobbit die a horrible death. Stupid Elijah Wood and that dumb face he made over and over. Blech!
[/IMG]
I got tired of Frodo looking over his shoulder at the camera in slow motion.
Cut the Hobbits out of the LOTR movies and you have some great films.
I skip the Hobbit parts on DVD. Sorry to say it.... but in the Two Towers especially, hours of Frodo n' Sam wandering through the same grey landscape achieving nothing cannot compare with Gandalf curing Theoden, the battle at Helm's Deep, Aragorn's interaction with Eowyn, and all that jazz.

After watching Citizen Kane i felt that i had just watched 2 hours of my life just vanish before my eyes. The same goes for the lord of the rings borigy.
Saving Private Ryan.
The beginning was stunning,....... but everything shown after that bordered on absurdity or madness. Every decision, every move, every representation, every premise, etc, .....was really, really bad.
The film was a great tribute to the WWII generation but that darn "infantry sub-processor" the Army put in the back of my head was screaming while I watched that movie.
V.
You hit the nail on the head, there.

+1. I watched this a second time thinking I must be missing something...I'm not.
