quick ? it is ammo, i know, but it is snub nose ammo, so i'm asking here
The basic difference between a 158 +P LSWCHP, and a 158 +P non jacketed LHP.... is that the SWC is a "softer" lead? do I have that right?
if so, how much softer is the SWC, and will the bad guy really be able to tell. would the regular LHP penetrate deeper? I have some SWC, but i paid lots for it, if i can get 99% the same efectiveness out of a much cheaper, and more readily available ammo, i will. thanks

Both are all lead. SWC is just the shape of the bullet...semi wad cutter.
Of the 158gr LSWCHP +P loads (aka FBI loads), the Remington version uses the softest lead and has the best prospect for expansion from a snubby.

IME, the Remington .38 Special+P LSWCHP has the softer lead and the better accuracy, better precision, and far cleaner ignition than the similar Winchester load.
The Winchester load is unbelievably dirty, has mediocre precision, and merely-approximate (if still "good enough") accuracy.
The Remington load is pinpoint in accuracy, outstanding in precision in my hands with my guns, and pretty clean-firing.
I've fired quite a bit of both of these loads in my Smith J-frame snubbies, and the Remington is my choice for CCW.
I haven't ever tried the Federal version.
Keep in mind that it may be called "LHP" even if it has the SWC profile. I believe Remington uses the term "LHP" for their LSWCHP.
