My Dad is older and does not like a semi-auto. He wants a snubby .38
Does anyone know who makes a really light 5-6 shooter?
He has a chrome plated Rossi 5 shot, but it is heavy and the barrel is too long.

Wrong subforum - go to the snubbie forum.

As to your question - current guns are made by SW, Taurus, Charter Arms.

You should be able to find a deal on an older S&W airweight.

Taurus makes a decent, low priced snubbie.

S&W 642 (silver) or 442 (black). Light. Concealed hammer. Good quality. Try looking at gunbroker.com.

Ruger Sp101. It is heavy for a snubbie, but you can shoot full house .357s through it and not have to worry about it shaking apart. It will outlive you.

I do not own any revolvers but has anyone seen a revolver named The Judge? It shoots a .410 shell. Cool as heck.

Made by Taurus. It fires either a .410 shot shell or .45 Colt cartridge.

S&W makes a complete line of airweight and scandium revolvers that range from 12 oz. up to 16 oz in 38/357 caliber. Your dad may find the little guns harder to shoot, especially with .357 or +P 38 special. They really buck and roar.

I would recommend the S&W model 60, however, if you are set on it being lite, you will have to go with the airweights... just my .02 Good Luck!

Bingo and a good gun for a backup too.

 Your father might want to actually fire one, first, before he buys. The Scandium S&W's are expensive to purchase and horrific to hang onto while shooting.

Personally, I'd go heavier and select a Ruger SP101 - Not as easy to carry, but a heck of a lot easier to actually use! ;)

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Smith & Wesson revolvers that start with 6 as the model number are (almost always) made out of stainless steel. Their standard, more traditional models are made out of blued steel, or nickel plated steel.

Blued steel is more prone to rust, although stainless WILL rust under certain conditions. Both usually weigh about the same.

S&W also makes Airweight and Scandium (an ultra lightweight alloy similar to titanium) revolvers, but as others have said, they can allow quite a bit more recoil.

Another variant is hammer style: exposed, shrouded, or hammerless (not really, but completely inside the frame).

Just like Glocks, try a few and see if they fit your hand, and if the recoil is managable. Then make your choice.

My .02

How is the variable of age impacting his decision making?

Special needs?

What is his experience level with available types and systems?

These guys have given u good advice, i pack a smithy 642 38 in my pocket, light shoots plus p, little recoil, around 350, your dad will like this gun, comes in black or dull silver. if u live in mucky climate go with the dull silover model...check gunsamerica, or buds......mike....load with CORBON 38 plus p DPX AMMO, 1200ft per sec, 350 lbs, id say thats a good package..

When he finds his primary gun, tell him to look into a small pocket gun for backup. I was actually looking into getting an NAA mini .22 Magnum revolver as my 3rd gun I'd have on me. Yeah, I'm that cautious about having backup guns on me, just in case. And I don't even live in a high crime area. lol!

Anyway, check it out, for yourself, too... it's pretty small... easily fit on the ankle or in a pocket holster!

I had the same problem finding a carry gun for my wife. She doesn't like autos all that much, so a revolver was the best fit for her.

We ended up with a S&W 640 - all stainless steel snubby in .357. Other than a light smoothing of the action, the only thing I added was a XS Express front sight. That big ball of white is easy for her eyes to pick up (a big concern for older eyes!) She loves it, and is a great comfort for her when she is out of the house.

She keeps it loaded with HydraShock +p+, as full house .357's were too hot. If we were looking now, I might take a long look at the new .327 mag - but I'd have to play with to see how it works.

Good luck,
Bob S.

Sweet snubby. My Dad is 73. I bought him a 26 and told him how to operate it, He will not tell me, but I know he is not comfortable with it.
A snubby is something he understands, and is more likley to carrry, than a 26 with 1 chambered. I found that when SOME people get older, some things are not easily learned or not convinced. I can't explain it,but I know the snubby will be better for him. After these pics that were posted,I might be able to convince my wife to carry a snubby also.
Sorry this was posted in the incorret forum listing.

:) That's what I thought! It's, also, the reason I suggested trying before you buy. I'm at that age in life where I understand what it means to start getting older. (Ain't that much fun!) Your hands aren't as strong as they used to be; and, little by little, arthritis begins to creep into your joints.

I'd recommend that you show your dad a small revolver with a Hogue Monogrip on it. My wife carries a Ruger SP-101. It's loaded with 357 mag. Gold Dots right now; but, it has the advantage of being able to fire 38 special for practice, and is easy on her small hands. If I were to remove the Hogue grip, I'm sure she wouldn't care for this revolver quite as much.

A Charter Arms Undercover is still under $300/Shipped new, and only weighs 16 oz empty. The one here: Charter Undercover at Buds Gunshop (http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/203/products_id/38052) has over sized grips that help tame recoil. An excellent option for someone who is looking for a snubby on a budget.

I only carry Snubs. I have Four 357s, Three 38s, and a NAA 22Mag. The lightest 38 at 15oz. is my Mdl. 37 bobbed S&W. It comfortably shoots +P Ammo and pocket carry is no problem. The heaviest is a 617 Taurus, Seven shots of 357, best carried IWB. Take a look at Taurus, they have a new Lite, Six shot, 38Spl.
