My new J-frame rattles. Sounds like something metalic moving inside.
Any ideas what it might be?
Seems to work fine.

Unload the weapon. Close the cylinder. Shake it and see if you can determine where it is rattling. If not, place your finger on various parts (one at a time) and shake again. When the rattle stops, EUREKA... You found it !!!!!!

After you find the part that is rattling, let us know and maybe we can help fix it.

I had the exact same problem and realized it was the ammo. Smith and Wesson 442 (.38 special). No big deal if that is what your problem is too.

Found the culprit. It's the small plate that sets next to the hammer that connects to the lock.
Will continue to try and find a "fix".
Just seems to be the way the lock is designed.
This is my first Smith since the locks were introduced and I was not familiar with them.

I had a rattle in my new 386 (not a J-frame but this still applies) and went so far as to remove the side plate to find it. It was a little vertical bar inside called a "hammer block" that has to be somewhat loose to function properly. The locking tab rattled too but not as loudly. The hammer block tinks the scandium alloy side plate like glass.

A post-war Smith & Wesson is supposed to have a loose-fitting hammer block; if your S&W is silent, it is likely missing a part and should be immediately checked by an armorer or 'smith. A Ruger revolver has a loose-fitting transfer bar; if your Ruger is silent, it should immediatley be inspected by an armorer or 'smith.
