Just got into a new hobby. The wife decided we needed an alternative healthy pastime and so we got into mountainbikes! The local community pala is very active and trails for all skill levels are very accessible within reasonable traveltime from Metro Manila. It's also very good aerobic, non-impact exercise so the hobby is sustainable even for the older bunch. We decided to go for quality, pre-built trail bikes for our starter kit and slowly upgrade as our skill level progresses. I got a Jamis Dakar XC full suspension and the wife got a Marin Bobcat hardtail. Both got very good reviews on the net stating that these were being marketed as "entry-level trail ready" but are good enough to be used in even expert trails.
Anybody here into the same hobby?

I also got into mountain biking last month together with my high school/college buddies. I have a Merida TFS 500 hardtail. The trails that I have ridden are Maarat in San Mateo, La Mesa (although i think its still closed due to training of their staff).
I have yet to try Sta Rosa and the others.
There's a Tour of the Fireflies this April 20. Its a 41 km ride around Metro Manila.
See you in the trails
Yup yup
My mtb is probably 5 years old na yata :) Diamondback frame ( bankrupt na hehe ), Marz Z1 forks , deore comps and various generic parts
I've been downgrading lately haha ayaw masira ng frame and fork
Sta rosa is a mtb town, dami trails from malacanang sa canlubang to Tags and down again to silang and sta rosa
Dami rin mayayabang hehe I suggest a good armbar agad

Welcome to the MTB world! Give it time and you will soon contract this quirky biker malady called "UPGRADE-ITIS". Ha-ha.
Anybody can say where would be the nearest trails, say from Paranaque?

First got a mountain bike, then when I started joining duathlons (sprint lang naman), lugi ako, sa got a road bike, he he.
You should try long distance road bike too Bikethiek. Very relaxing.
Joining organized bike rides (like Bike for Hope or Tour of the Fireflies) is most fun.

I'm into road naman. I also have a mtb hardtail but I'm too chicken ****** to do serious trails hehehehe. But I do road races here are there. There is a road race this weekend SCETEX our div would run 120 kms - ngayon palang parang linalagnat na ako sa dadating na hirap hahahahaha.

WOW!!! d ko yata kaya ganun kalayo eh. do i need to go uphill for it to be effective in weight loss?
I am a avid biker here in the states,
check out the following link.
www.mtbr.com
tons of great info, sort of glocktalk of bikes
i own the following
Titus Moto Lite 2
Cracked the frames of a LiteSpeed Niota Al(terrible customer service)
and Tomac Eli
WOW!!! d ko yata kaya ganun kalayo eh. do i need to go uphill for it to be effective in weight loss?

Yes kayang kaya yan - just don't get the ultra light bikes. To start have a check up with a doctor if he gives you a green light to exercise get a good fitting bike (doesn't mean expensive - just one simple bike that fits you well) then ride it and ride some more. Yes you can lose weight but it depends still on your eating habits but one thing is for sure - you will feel better after a few weeks of biking. One thing with cycling is it is non impact so less chances of getting injured.
Oh yeah one thing with exercising your appetite might increase a few days to a week after starting but in the long run exercising is an appetite suppressant

it will certainly help you lose money.

I'm not familiar w/ the new bikes
Daming bago every year
I got my friends 17t na Merida hardtails last year
It's not the cheapest pero sakin maganda na sya ( equivalent sa MAP1 hehe )
Dont ride the trails much ngayon kasi busy sa triathlon
Pero go to a good bikeshop sigurado they have a group who rides parati
it will certainly help you lose money.
I dont think it will beat IPSC in that department :)
A bike mechanic would work on my bike the whole morning and charge me 100 bucks
Now Imagine metrillo as a bike mechanic haha
no, it cant beat ipsc sa gastos :)
and it comes nowhere near having the BRD.
:)

Rifle is more expensive the pistol?
I thought baliktad , coz my friends shooting ipsc rifle dati told me bagay daw sa kuripot ang rifle
Wala naman ako kilalang kuripot hehe
Now shotgun , yan ang mahal
5t laglag sa isang practice session

Now this is also a new hobby for me. Currently have a Taiwan MTB to use for biking with my kid but doing research on a sturdy trail bike. Leaning on a hardtail and some entry level "sturdy parts". Looks like I will be spending around 15K to build it.

you can get a built bike for around 13k - jamis brand or build your own around 11k. I agree with allegra - don't do hills and climbs first - hirap lang abot mo niyan - enjoy the sport first puro patag and good roads muna. 30-45 min a day would be fine.

yon yon yung masama!!! I had to bike back to the house of my cousin which is inside clark (super super bagal na) then kumain kami sa isang typical angeles eatery - sisig, bbq and chopsuey.

what is the difference between roadbike and MTB?
im thinking of a budget project bike that i would build for this year. Still have six months to go. care to share some ideas
Speaking about bikes, there's a bike race that was featured on TV last night. One biker from Calgary said that they could be on a bike 20 hours a day, and could be pedalling for 700 kms a day:

i have been mtn biking and road biking for around 10 years now. I started ridning when my son got into cross country mtn biking racing and cyclocross. i did a few races in the masters class that kicked my *****. I always got lapped by the female riders as they started right after the men!
i have a cannondale jekyl and a R2000 road bike. here in NC we have a lot of great mtn bike single track. Any one here ever been to Tsali in NC? If you are in the southeast you need too ride there some day! i have got to get back there this year
Thanks for the reply andrew ang papa A. Basically the bike is for city use only bike around the neighborhood. Thinking of a hard tail.

road bikes are the racers - the ones you see in tour de france or warlboro tour/ tour de pilipinas befores - thin tires and handle bars that look like sheep horns :)
mtb - straight bar some with shocks infront and or rear back. Thicker tires and usually with studs.
for city use: hardtail, rigid fork and slick tires or check out the built bikes (jamis or giant) for commuters. To keep the price down no need for disc brakes - nice to have but not needed for city use. Budget around 15k

Thanks mga pre! It is not really your hardcore downhill rig. It is something in between a cross country bike and a downhill specific one. If I am not mistaken it is an all terrain thing.
Left mountian biking when I noticed that riders are getting younger, more adventurous, daring and spectacular in their riding while I started to feel the pain hehehehehehehehe.
I would really love to go back but would need some barkada to ride along with. This time I need to go biking to get fit unlike before which is to get some thrills thats why it is boring for me now and need an added push:supergrin:
See you around the tracks soon (in my case probably around CCP center and MOA during mornings hehehehehe).
Binoy,
Your bike is also a cross breed of sorts with mountain breeding but slick tires for ease of use along the paved roads.
It depends - from 3k and above. Depends on where you want to put it. roof or spare tire or trunk or inside the vehicle.
Check out life cycle naman they are the distributors of hollywood racks and then jump over to Thule located across diamond motors. But be warned mahal sa thule :)
to add: Sir Wp.22, I suggest you get a spare inner tube, tire levers and a small pump when you get your helmet. Flats are pretty common especially during rainy season. When you buy the items I suggested to have the mechanic teach you how to use it. Don't be shy to ask - lahat tayo nagsisimula sa ganyan.
I just remove both wheels at saddle , kasya na kahit lancer size car
thanks edtf

Dapat pain free yan unless umaahon ka and pain and suffering hanap mo
bro ano ba tamang adjustment? yung height ba ng upuan should be waist level or higher?
thanks

Ganda ng bike a
Looks better than mine , w/c is 7 years old na yata
Takes little practice to learn to remove the rear wheel , para lang nag field strip ng baril
Pero dapat talga matutuo ka , in case you get a flat

tama yung straight for both mtb and road pero hindi diretsong diretso. Try pedaling for a few minutes then place your heel on the pedal (while on the bike and bike is running). Your leg should be straight or near straight. When you put back your foot on the right position there should be a bit of a bend. This will eliminate your hip rocking side ways too (too much extension)
Hindi ako nagbibiro baka gusto ninyo mag la mesa dam ride tayo. As in pasyal tayo kuwentuhan bolahan ganon lang.

Some of the guys at our gun club already has started riding every morning , kwentuhan/breakfast ride
Like shooting , mas masaya pag barkadahan
Ever since I started riding years ago , laki na ng natipid ko
Not just because it's cheaper than ipsc , or sa tipid sa gas
Tipid din sa damit, all I wear everyday is shorts at tshirt hehe
Tipid sa relos , it's a p2500 heart rate monitor
Tipid sa gimik , kasi maaga ang tulog
Plus riding thru La Mesa Park or the Bataan killer Loop, or bombing down the rock gardens ng Makiling or crisscrossing Sagada makes you realize you dont need a lot of money to have this much fun or satisfaction

pwede kaya if we go biking yung flat road muna wala masyado uphill newbie eh (mataba ako). ( p. Guevarra, wilson, m. marcos, barcelona sts.) lahat uphill.

try greenhills center muna - ikot ikot lang for a couple of weeks. Early morning so that there aren't cars pa. Then when you get bored take those hilly rides. If you don't mind the traffic take wilson, ortigas go to QC up to Channel 2 then back.

old school these days but does the job. cant off road any longer but provides a plush ride on the road with firm road tires.
great sport great for fitness while having fun great way to see nature. pack emergency kit / tool kit with replacement tubes and fire making needs in your hydration pack in case you spend the night on the mountain or break a leg. Use buddy system.

YUP. Funny thing if you are riding a car and see people biking high noon you would think of them as crazy. Then you will find yourself doing the same thing
Are you getting the hang of biking na? Sarap din ano?!?! Before you know it you would be passing the road going up beside St. Paul's pasig then ULTRA then Antipolo then you would ask Edmund for any easy trail then by next year you would be asking him when is the next race

Sir you mean you bike 3 hours a day!! wow sana puwede din ako ganyan :)
I just came from there this afternoon. I had my bike serviced. Ayoko talaga pumunta sa mga bike shop parang shooter na pumunta sa gunshop or kids going to toy r us
I saw giant, trek and merida bikes there. There was this trek street/commute bike that caught my eye - ang ganda - simple lang 7 speed and it uses 700x31c tires the bad part is it was 50k :wow:.

3 hours kasama na kwentuhan, tambay at pahinga sa mga kakilala.how i wish i can bike 3 hours straight.need more adjustment specially my sleeping habit to go more mileage on myself.lagi kasi ako puyat.newbie lang sa mtb, still using 2nd hand bike from japan, all chromoly steel kaya mabigat.planning to get a lighter xcountry bike pero i want to get used of using this japan bike first para pag sampa sa mas upgraded e medyo magaan na.am using belt type drive train with 3 speed selector, para konti lang choice muna, balak ko sana single speed lang pero eto na ung nabili ko.wala lang akong buddy mag bike kaya always solo flight, kakainip din kadalasan.

Got my new bike today! Here's a pic from the net. This is what it looks like stock. I'll post pics of the actual unit I got plus a few upgrades tomorrow.
It's an 08 Haro X7. All-mountain ang config niya meaning it's beefier than XC (cross-country) but still light enough to be pedalled uphill. It's also not as hard-core as dedicated downhill bikes but it can handle most of the DH courses here in the Philippines.

for on road village and moa and up use pwedeng pwede na ung jamis or gt bike.simple ang magaan.ganun din target ko bilihin.
i was asking my office mate a former football captain of RP team regarding muscle ache he told me mag bike ka lang ulit tangal yan.
tama yan. As long as hindi injury yan ok to keep on biking just use a lighter gear. Light gear high RPM (your legs). In fact you call this ride as a loosening ride

Pot,
Si allan got a Santa Cruz Bullit frame. He's scouting for the other components as we speak. (just like his AR)
Ako instant gratification kaya i got the HARO.
Medyo sinipag ako kanina kaya lininis ko bikes ko :)

Let's bike! I'm doing the Sta. Rosa "Reverse Upak" this tuesday. It is a newbie friendly trail which includes all aspects of mountain biking. We will be taking the reverse "Upak" trail in Sta. Rosa which consists of a moderate ascent, moderate downhill (40-45kph. max) and a scenic single track trail through corn and pineapple fields with a gorgeous view of Makiling.

Yup. There were lots of them and the best i would say are the KRANKED & Northshore series. KRANKED 6 na ata ngayon. I still have them (old ones) in VHS and if you want and still have a VHS player I can lend them to you.
Great MTB riding was started by Hans Ray who I think visited us again recently. Others during my time are Brian Lopes, Cedric Gracia , Ryan Leech and the daredevil of them all Josh Bender (buhay pa kaya ito?).
yesterday went biking at 1pm paksyet ang init attended the laching of nikon club phils at gerry's grill sa jupiter st. makati. i thought di ko kakayanin ang makati mandaluyong bridge buti na lang maganda strenching na ginawa ko.
question bakit mas pagod ako sa papunta than pabalik from biking?

07-07-2008, 05:28
diba when you travel by car ganun din. mas mabilis pabalik kesa papunta hehe. i dunno why, cguro psychological.
I agree could be psychological plus I bet your ride going home is a bit slower and a lot more relaxed. This happens to us too on rides - such a big relief that we are near the end of the ride
I've never had the urge to upgrade [ shocking ]

Eh Boss baka naman sobrang hi tech kasi bike mo to start with

parang bundok ano hehe. papunta uphill. so nakaka pagod. ang destination yan ang tuktuk ng bundok. pabalik downhill na. so mas hindi nakaka pagod. so kahit pareho lang ang incline papunta at pabalik. ganun pa rin ang feeling. just shows kung gaano ka powerful mind natin ano!
Eh Boss baka naman sobrang hi tech kasi bike mo to start with
No no

pot, i think this is possible. theory lang to ha. what you do is you dont plan your ride. you just ride on a whim. parang isang araw me panahon ka tapos wala kang magawa......ride!
ang theory is if you plan you brace yourself for the ride. if you dont plan you dont brace yourself. so mas "loose" ka. mas relax.
try it. if it works post mo dito. good luck hehehehe.
one more thing. papunta ka you set variable destinations. parang kung baga dun kalang muna sa malapit, kung kaya pa then dagdagan mo konti, kung kaya pa dagdag ulit, and so on and so forth.
