View Full Version : New CW45... whats wrong with this pistol?
I've got 300 rounds through my new CW45 now and have noticed that things are not getting better.
I could use a little advice on two things this gun is doing (or not).
1. primer swipe (tadpole shape primer strike) is very pronounced with this gun, is this common with Kahr, or is the thing unlocking early like I suspect?
2. Four times now the gun has chambered a new round but failed to cock
(I assume). When the trigger is pulled, it travels fully and nothing happens. Round is fully chambered, slide completely forward. This one really bugs me, because I can't understand how it can happen. The thing normally cocks the striker in the first inch of slide travel.
Lemon or fixable?

#1 is normal.
#2 is pretty spooky and I'd send it back to Kahr to have them look at it.
Spooky is right, since you can't just pull the trigger again.
Racking the slide, chambering new round produces a Bang, but that
sucks. Examination of ejected round shows absolutely no primer strike.
Its probably going back, have an email in to them now, we'll see how they handle it. Hope they can fix it, I've already shortend the grip to handle the 5 round mags. I got real lucky and the job turned out perfect, I don't want to do the work again, I'm not that lucky.
What's the turn-around time from these guys anyway?
Did you do a good cleaning job? Especially after cutting down the grip. Kahr may not look with favor on your modifications, could have some effect on re cocking due to shorter grip (just my guess). Good Luck
Yeah, I was anal about keeping crap out of it during this work. Stuffed it with a rag , taped up the top and blew it out with comp air for before each test fit.
The gun malfunctioned before the mod and I dont think they are that kind of company anyway (looking for a way out of a warranty claim).
Its so much better as a carry gun now, I'd do the mod again regardless of warrranty issues. I thought the .45 might be trouble with this short of a grip in a light pistol, but its really not a problem. It should be offered by the factory, but I think they like selling the pm45 for $350 more.
Next I'm taking off the sights (like my Detonics mark 7) and Duracoating the slide HK black. This is going to be a close up, last ditch defensive carry gun, not a range toy.

im sure the gun is cocking, the way they work unless the cocking cam or more likely the spring is broken, it will cock. probably the trigger bar. the trigger bar acts as the disconnector in these guns. ive found on my pm9 after i broke the bar and replaced it that the new bar had a burr on the surface that seats in the slide recess thats milled in the bottom of the slide. this is to keep the gun from firing out of battery. also my bar spring was weak. i remove the burr with a diamond hone and replaced the spring...regards rick

= no warranty claim
That's not what they said, they gave me a return number and said send it in.
I think they understand taking 1/2" off the grip has no bearing on function.
The factory was doing this same mod for the same reason- its a lot better
concealed gun.
I've got a HK I've modified despite their strict warning it may affect the LIFETIME warranty. Anyway, sent the gun in for some repair,no issues. If the work is done properly, and its unrelated to a warranty issue, reputable manufacturers will not treat you poorly. If you screw it up, expect coverage and complain when you don't get it, that's pretty low of you.
If I want something on a gun changed I'm gonna do it, not be held hostage to some warranty card.
after i broke the bar and replaced it .... rick
Rick, on yours with the broken bar, it probably stayed "disconnected" right?
Mine is a very intermittent problem, but agree it is more than likely
as you say, trigger bar related. My expieriance with disconnector problems
on other guns have always been very "black or white", they either work or they don't.

Tadpole shaped primer strike is normal. My K9 and CW9 both exhibit this pattern.
I bought a CW9 and had consistent Fail to Fire issues. The primer strikes were very light with 3 different brands of ammo. I called Kahr. They gave me a service number and I returned the pistol. They replaced the slide. The only part that I DID NOT like was the fact that I had to spend nearly $50 to send it back to them, overnight air, for repair on a New gun.
Turn around time was 1 week.
