How to resize photo for custom avatar?

Sorry, I know this has probably been addressed before but can somebody please give me some simple instructions on how to resize a photo to within the custom avatar size limits?

Find a pic you like. Cut out the part you want, and shrink it to size using Irfanview.

Put the picture into the program, left click, then box the part of the picture you want to keep. Click the little scissor icon, then past what you copied back into irfan


Go to image, then resize/resample. Put in the numbers you want 100-xxx, and make sure preserve aspect ratio is on.
