View Full Version : How many mags on belt for USPSA production?

I carry 4 mags in individual pouches for USPSA production shooting. That's 40 on my belt and 11 in the gun when I start.
Are there any stages where I should expect to need more than that?
Anyone carry a 5th mag in there back pocket as a last resort? I figured for those in 10 round mag limited states that you all carry a "stripper" mag in your pocket anyways. If you keep it full it might mean the difference between leaving a steel standing or taking it down.
I only carry three. I would never carry more than four.
There is no limit on how many mags you can carry. The limitation is not the round count, but how many times you need to reload. Just because a stage is only 32 rounds doesnt mean you don't have more than 4 reloads, it all depends on the target arrays. You might have 4 shots, plus a couple of steels, followed by 8 shots, and so on. Reload whenever you have time to move. And never have a standing reload in USPSA, plus a mag in your pocket is worthless after the clock starts. I shoot Production with 6 stixs on the belt.

I carry at least 4 on the belt. I also carry an extra in my pocket for emergencies or alot of steel. Makes a diff on where you plan your reloads.
I used to carry four on my belt and a barney mag in my back pocket for a total of 61 rounds. I never burned through all the ammo, but sometimes needed almost all the mags.
Better to have and not need than need and not have.

I'm curious as to why never more than 4?
Well you guys never saw JJ Racaza do his famous mag throw down to activate the stompers. Instead of stopping to stomp on each platform, and shoot the movers, he ran buy and threw down big stixs to activate the # 1 and # 2 stompers, and then stopped at the last shooting position, saving tons of time. Mags are not just mags... Plus you have never fumbled a reload, or had a burp?

That's Awesome !! Any chance its on YouTube ??
I was carrying 6 on my belt and 1 more in the gun until I started open.

First, because I don't have more mag pouches. Second, I've not yet had a stage that was structured in such a way that I would need more than five mags. Third, at a certain point, unless you're got a *really* wide ass, there's only so many mag pouches you can fit and reach on your belt. At a certain point, it would be just as fast/convenient to reach into your back pocket as opposed to reaching all the way over to the small of your back.
I shoot IPSC Production in Australia & we are restricted to 10 round mags, for all semi-auto's no matter the Division.
I carry 5 mag pouches with 5 mags on every stage. If I decide on a 32 round stage or similar that their is enough movement to possibly lose a mag or fumble a reload, I'll take a 6th mag in hand. One in the gun, 5 on my belt.
Cheers, Ando.

You can never have too much ammo unless you're trying to swim, or maybe if you're on fire.
I carry 5.
I only have 4 on my Limited rig, but that's usually not a problem since I'm running 20 round magazines. However, I shot L-10 with the same rig once (only 10 round per mag) and I know at times I was wishing I had that 5th mag.

Four on belt one in left pocket and a Barney in the back pocket, this served me well in Production. I have moved on to open and carry 2 big sticks, a 17 rounder to dump in the dirt (in case of a mag change) and a Barney.

I have 5 pouches on my Belt, but I don't always carry mags in them.
I always have at least one more mag on my belt than I plan to actually use.

I go to the line with 7 on my belt and the 1 for my gun. As it was said earlier I would rather have them and not need them. Although as my skill level has improved I do kinda think it is a little overkill

I carry 5 on the belt. 61 rounds should be enough for anything.

Iam using 6 on the belt this weekend for single stack. They a Texas star on one of the stages and plate racks on another. Hopefully this year I can get thru without problems. The Space City Challenge has always been the one match where I have gun problems.

I carry four sometimes five and depending on the match and the stages, I'm prepared to carry six. I have at least eight mags in my bag.
USPSA Production is a different game than IDPA.

Love it!
We carry 5 on our belts, and one in our pockets.
My wife did actually use them all once. She had not long been shooting, and came across a Texas Star for the first time:rofl:

5 on my belt. Had to use all 5 only once before at a local match.

Yeah, five on the belt and one in the gun for a total of 60 rounds at the start of the stage for IPSC Production here in Oz.
Load in procedure is to always pull mag five first, load in one round then slip the mag back in its location, then pull mag six and load it into the gun and holster.
Number five mag is usually only for emergencies so it only having 9 rounds isn't a big problem.

I keep one mag right in the front of the belt where the typical limited/open first mag is for the initial load which always has 11 rounds in it for the barney bullet in the chamber. I keep it there so I remember which goes in first so I dont hop up to open class, It also has a different base plate so It stands out

I used to wear one single pouch like that in the middle of my back...as my loader mag. I took it off for most of last year, as it is hard enough to "sit with back against chair" with all those mags on.
Your front pouch, even though you are only using it as a loader, doesn't comply with the letter of the rule. :dunno:
All reloads must come from the belt, unless there are none left on the belt.
