View Full Version : Stock Shooting Tournaments?
I was thinking about shooting some IPSC but all I hear from friends is talk about 1911 race guns and costing around 2 grand just to get in the running, it all sounds rediculus. What I want is something bone stock, where I can run around and shoot on a course with others that do the same in tactical situations and such. Is there such a thing? And if so is there one in good old Georgia by chance?
Thanks all. :-)

yrone, Have you ever been to a drag race? When you watch on tv, you only see the top fuel dragsters & that type of multi $ car, but if you are there in person, there are lots of different classes. Same goes with IPSC. There are different classes but when you hear about IPSC, you hear about the "Race guns". Most matches I have been to or heard about involve everything from bone stock to race so find one & go have some fun :) I live in Texas so I can't help in your search for a local match, sorry. I recommend you go to IPSC, IDPA, & any other initial you can find to compete ;g I firmly believe that nothing helps marksmanship more than practicing & if practice is fun, so much the better. By the way, if you are into travel, check out my post under "General competition....." down at "anyone really like to shoot?" Colorado is a great vacation spot & you can shoot a bone stock pistol in this competition. ;f Happy shooting! MLM
yrone,
If you want to shoot a stock gun in IPSC you can shoot in the production class which is tailor made for the use of stock guns. If you want something more tactically realistic you should try IDPA. IDPA is a defense oriented disipline in which you can shoot in different classes depending on your weapon of choice.
Both are great fun and will help with gun handling skills.
For more info check out these websites:

Ummm.... GSSF? It's not 'tactical', but it's right good shooting. It's designed for beginners and isn't technically difficult, but there's no limit on how well it can be shot either.

This is great news! I will check out all these links. I had no idea so many classes existed for different shooters. Hopefully I will find something of interest around my area, or at least within driving distance. Is there anything in IDPA thats geared towards a beginner in competition? Nevermind, Ill check the website. lol
Thanks again everybody!
Here is also a helpful website for shooting sports like IDPA, GSSF, etc. Also has some technical info.

yrone,
Atlanta, huh?
South River Gun Club east of town near Conyers shoots IPSC, IDPA, and GSSF. I have come over from Alabama to shoot the Georgia State IDPA Championship there since its startup. Several of their folks post here and will probably see your location.
For location and schedules, see:
http://www.southrivergunclub.com/
There was a long discussion of getting started in IDPA a while back.
Most of it would apply to IPSC/USPSA Production Division as well, just bring more ammo. I and some others posted every tip we could think of. See:

There is a bunch of USPSA matches around ATL. Check out this web site for more info: http://uspsa-area6.org/
Toward the bottom is a club locator. For outdoor shooting, try cherokee and South River. I just started shooting USPSA and I'm shooting at South River. It is so much fun, no wonder Hillary wants it banned. I'm shooting in Production Division which is a stock gun only division. We are ranked against other stock guns so its a level playing field. Although I'm still at the bottom ;|
Here's two secrets about those race guns .... The guns are very high maintenance, the shooters would do just as well with a stock gun (these guys are truly amazing) and the shooters are very nice and very willing to help the new shooter.
South River also does IPDA. Check out:

This link is from Claude Werner's web site. He runs IPDA at South River. Claude occasionally visits Glocktalk. I think his email is info@shooterscoach.com
American Classic Marksman in Norcross does an indoor IPDA match. I practice at ACM and find it a fine facility
You will hear all sorts of criticisms/Judgements about IPDA and USPSA. IGNORE THEM, ITS JUST NOISE, JUST SHOOT AND HAVE FUN! I'm looking forward to shooting IPDA. The reason I haven't is my family time commitments.
Hope this helps. BTW, if you get into this, and you will. You could concievably shoot in matchs twice a week every month.
Wow, more responces than I had anticipated :-) Im reading alot about IDPA and it sounds very interesting. I am going to have to check out the South River site as well since Im not too far from Conyers. Anyone else here regularly shoot here? Maybe we can get together on a common day or something.
I started IDPA matches about 3yrs. ago, at the closest club I could find. They made a new-comer feel like family, greeting me with lots of welcomeing advice, good company. I shot my first Va. state level match this past weekend, and it was a great experience for three full days. Didn't win a damn thing, but loved every miunte of it. You can't go wrong with IDPA.
