Confusion reported on whether CHLs can carry during 30-day grace period after expiration date
Nearly half of the more than 100,000 concealed handgun licensees (CHLs) in Ohio are up for renewal in 2008, and questions on the renewal process or reports about renewal applicants' experiences in various counties continue to come in to Buckeye Firearms Association.
One of the more frequently asked questions deals with whether or not a person can carry on their license during the 30-day grace period that is provided for a person to apply for a renewal even after the expiration date on the license.
Some reports have come in of sheriffs saying that a person can carry, others have had their sheriff say that they may not.

A parallel might be with your drivers license which expire on your birthday. You have a 30 day grace period before you have to retake the test BUT you are driving on an expired license the day after your birthday.
I would not chance it, get it renewed before it expires.
I would think that if you don't have a renewed license after the 30 day grace period then you can not carry. That's the point of the 30 day grace period.
That's also the reason of the 90 day renewal period, prior to the expiration date of your license, just so that doesn't happen.

The Sheriff in Scioto Co. said I couldn't until I get my new License, but I could use my FL. License as long as it was valid. Typical of government agencies. No body agrees on anything.
When your CHL expires it is expired, the only thing the 30 day period does is to give you additional time to renew without having to retake the course.
Spoke to summit County and they said once your license reaches the expiration date you can no longer carry, even if you are waiting for the renewal.
From the Ohio Attorney General's office: http://www.ag.state.oh.us/le/prevention/pubs/ccw_faq.pdf
May I carry my handgun during the 30-day “grace period”
after expiration?
Yes. You have a grace period of thirty days after the license
expires during which your license remains valid.
In Texas, the day on your license is THE day...Carry after that date and you are illegal...You must start your renewal process 2-4 months before your exp. date to make sure you are covered...

When you think that we in Ohio have 90 before the exp. date, that is three months, why would we let it expire? We might have things come up, we might procrastinate, but three months is a long time to get something in order instead of waiting for a 30 grace period. I think it's called being responsible. We don't have to wait until the last minute, the state gave us three months ahead of time to take care of whatever we need to get it renewed. Mine was up May 13th and I took care of it in February, because it takes a while for them to process once you turn it in. Next time, five years from now, I'll have to have another class.

No, this is not right. You will never have to take another 12 hour class, unless you let your training certificate expire past 6 yrs. So, look at your original training certificate. You MUST go see an instructor PRIOR to it expiring and show proficiency with your firearm, and you will be given a new certificate. So, sounds like you most likely took your class in 2004? So, in 2010 go see an instructor.
Just FYI: if you take any additional training that provides a certificate, that will be good for your renewed certificate. Everyone should be getting regular advanced training anyhow!
You may not have to take the class again Glock 56. And to call a person irresponsible because they don't renew within the first 90 days is a little irresponsible on your part. You don't know an individuals situation, so don't pass judgement.
The OAG's site over rides a persons personal opinion. There is no reason to argue about it. FWIW the Montgomery Count Sheriffs office also told me that I can carry during the 30 day grace period. If your local sheriff told you other wise I would advise them of what the AG's site says.

You have to take a class within a six year period. So, if I took one in 2004, four years ago, and the new license is for five years, that makes a total of ten years. Like I said, before I renew in five years, I'll have to take another class of some type.
