View Full Version : Dieudonne Saive - Why is he not given credit?
The title to this thread pretty much says it all. Saive is possibly the 2nd most prolific gun designer ever. JMB was definitely great, I do not see how giving Saive credit for the design of the GP 35 would detract from Brownings reputation. Saive continued for 8 years after JMB's death, with numerous design changes along the way. How is the GP 35 not his design?

The name Dieudonne is too hard for BHP aficianados to spell, maybe? :dunno:

That and he sounds French.
The majority of what is the BHP comes from Saive, but he does get real credit from the FAL too.
Don't forget the FN49 and the work he did on the Browning Superposed shotgun too.
Saive was just as skilled as John Moses but did not possess the genius of Browning.

Wasn't Saive a Belgian? To call him French like calling a New Yorker a New Englander. Just not done.......

I sit corrected, that was an offensive thing to do. If he was still here I would apologize:supergrin:
Probably because no one can pronounce it correctly.
Someone want to give me an idea on how to say it?

He was skilled, and he was good, but he wasn't "almost JMB".
Kalashnikov, Simonov (SKS, PTRS, among others) Nagant, MAUSER (!!!!!!!!!!!) Colt all produced more designs than he did. He was a very skilled designer, and produced excellent designs (The FN49/SAFN was "ok" but on par with other designs of it's time) but he wasn't one of the "big name" guys. Tullio Marengoni designed some excellent weapons but I doubt any of you have even heard of him. Same thing.

I was going to say, we are talking real life here. This happens everyday: egos and politics are two common reasons.

Looks and possibly sounds (I have no idea how it's pronounced) too much like duodenum to me. Would you want a gun named after your small bowel?

I believe that it is pronounced "dee-uh-doe-nay". Means "gift of God", which is kinda nice for us believers. After all, the right to bear arms is a gift of no earthly government - and hence can be taken away by no government, right? And if this right is not granted by governments, then.... (you catch my drift).
Or, put another way, the two guys who gave us the High Power were folks blessed with considerable talents that had to come from somewhere. But this might lead me to speculate why Browning's middle name was Moses, and that will really get us off theme.....!
