What difference would there be between buying one of the Weaponlights that RRA and others sell as opposed to taking a surefire and a remote switch and a ring and making one?
The forearm kit and vertical handgrip lights arent what Im talking about. I just wondered it it was possible to make a good workable set up like this. Say out of a P6. Or would the shock from firing mess it up?

I would say reliability.
I ran a Maglight on a shotgun with a switch for a while. I expected the light bulb to go bad. It didn't. The switch did.

I am playing with a G2 LED Surefire with scope ring. I think it is SOMEWHAT functional, but not great. It needs a pressure switch to make it work with my grip.

Buy a Surefire 6P, G2, G3, or LED variant, a VLTOR or VTAC scout mount, and a bolt on rail. Best value going for a dedicated weapon light right now.

I have a P6 mounted to mine with scope rings...I didn't bother with a pressure switch as I can manipulate the tail cap switch just fine with my thumb while my hand is on the VFG..

I was looking at some of the lights and they look just like a normal surefire with switch. I have a cheapo pressure tape light on my shotgun that works good just cant find them anymore to go on my AR.
my G2 serves me well $20. Pressureswitch tailcap-$18. It shines out plenty far enough for me. More money for ammo!!!!!!!!

I'm running a Surefire 9PL right now.
When you can get 80 lumens of light for about 6 hours and still useful light for up to 6 hours more, that's damned reliable and useful.

Thanks I haven't been cruising LA police gear lately and I am looking for a light for my night stand sidearm!

I vote for the streamlight it will hod up longer and can be relied upon more, you can get a nice light later if you want to spend the cash. That being said the recoil on an AR is really not enough to worry about with most quality lights(g2/6p) so I think that route is open to.

I'm leaning toward the 6P and remote switch at the moment. Unless i find a heck of a deal on the Light/handgrip combo.

Thanks for this link. I needed a couple of lights for my Cx4s. That said I'm a fan of surefire lights. My favorite poor man's is the E2D in a Vltor scout mount.

I have a Surefire G2 LED mounted in a weaver scope ring. I added a Z49 clicker tailcap so I have a quick constant on feature. I'm not a fan of tape switches, increases your chance of a white light AD. I ordered my stuff from Bright Flashlights over on Ar15.com he has some great deals.
ETA: For those worried about recoil, surefire makes a shock isolated bezel you could put on the incandescent lights. You don't have to worry about recoil on an LED it won't effect one.
I had a Pentagon M3 in a Viking offset mount on my SBR, I have since put one of the Streamlight TLR-1 on it, I like it, it makes less of a foot print on the gun. The down side is I need to order the tape swtch and the replacement tail cap, so the $ bottom line is about the same as my previous setup.

A big +1 on the Streamlight. Be advised that there is a HUGE range of prices for the Streamlight; the above link is one of the better deals.
Lotsa lumens, good beam pattern, long burn time, and it appears to be sturdy and well made, and it adapts for a variety of mounts. It makes plenty of light at the distances that civilians can legitimately shoot at things.
I use mine on an AR and a Storm carbine; no pressure switch needed, as the tailcap is in easy reach.
