What to buy STI or SVI or something else?

I'm starting to look into an open steel challenge investment. I'd like to hear what ya'll suggest & why.

I agree with you Ede, Glocks are inexpensive & ,in stock form, are bullet proof but it's really hard to beat the fell of the 1911 or 2011. With that said currently I'm continuing to work on an open/unlimited 34 with a c-more & comp set-up. Already tried that G-22 w/ kkm cmp-ed barrel but never could keep it running perfectly.

So which models of STI's did you end up going with?

i ordered a USPSA single stack and a double stack tru-sight. got a pretty good deal at vances by ordering two and i get a good rate for being a loyal customer.

A Caspian is always a valid option if you can afford to have one built to your specs. They fit my hand better, so if I were to build a race gun (either open or limited), I'd go with Caspian.

For steel, you could also consider an EAA/Tanfoglio Witness. Since you'll be shooting wimpy loads, you won't have to worry about them breaking as you might if you were shooting major power factor loads. You could save a lot of money by getting a factory Witness open gun and having it customized to your specs.

:wavey:Thanks Flex! What holster are you using for your open-34 & steel? I'm currently leaning toward CR speed. That's what I've used for my 1911's & it worked really well, but the only other "open holster" I've got experience with is a hogue...I sold that one after the first time I drop the gun out of the holster & stuck the end of my barrel 2" in the mud. Won't buy another one of those again.

I like a Hogue for steel challenge, but it's no good for an open gun. Too much weight and not enough slab-side for the magnets.

A regular CR Speed will hang up with the mount that you have. I had to grind on mine a bit. I still don't know if I like it (it's been put away since we moved last summer). I can't tell that the Carver modified one is any better (I have never tried one, however).

That is one plus that the SJC mount seems to have. There is nothing under the dust cover to get snagged and slow the draw stroke. (And, less frame flex transferred into the mount, it would seem.)

kyle i think i'll make the steel match this weekend. my job ended today so i know i'm not working like i have been. only catch is wife is going to bristol for the drag race with her daughter and said i could go now, but i don't really want to go so i'll see how things work out with the wife.
