View Full Version : Why no Aimpoints with NV Monoculars?

Hi all,
I'm going to put a PVS14 Monocular on my flat top AR and I'm trying to decide what sight to put in front of it.
The only photos I've seen show an Eotech, usually a 552.
I'm wondering why I don't hear about folks using an Aimpoint with NV?
I have an Aimpoint ML2, which is NOT the NV compatible unit, and I like it just fine for day use or "white light" use....
So, what am I missing? Are the Eotech's vastly better with an NV monocular?
Thanks in advance,
JerryinPA

Generally speaking, those of us using an M68 with night vision also have a PEQ2 or PAQ4 laser aiming device, and don't "need" to mount the PVS to the gun. I've shot my M4 with it mounted, and it's fine for range use but crappy for anything BUT hitting targets (Sweeping everything in sight just to look around sucks).
I normally wear the 14 on a rhino mount on my MICH, and use the PEQ2 to aim.

So then I think you're saying that the vast, vast majority of fellows with PVS14/M68 helmet mount???
Probably the photos showing Eotechs with monoculars are just range-use rifles???

Well I'm saying the PVS14 (for military use) is typically mounted to your head, because you have an IR laser aimer on the rifle. This lets you keep your field of vision (looking around) without sweeping everything with the rifle, and aim without even bringing the weapon up (on the range, I fired with the M4 at my waist, from the kneeling position and still was making solid COM hits with the PVS on my head because I had the PEQ2 on).
I don't know why they never show an Aimpoint with the PVS, I know for dedicated night use some people do mount them (seen pics from Afghanistan, etc) but generally they just use the head mount.
So, MrMurphy you are only working with one eye using NV?
I was thinking the "best" solution would be one mounted on the rifle and one mounted on the helmet.

Yeah, one on the NVG the other on regular night. NVGs wipe out your night vision, this lets you have, more or less, one effective eye if you suddenly lose power to it.
Also helps a bit on depth perception (the old PVS7Bs had very little and covered both eyes).
At $3,000 apiece, we are lucky to have one per two man patrol. Even in the Army, where every guy (infantry at least) is supposed to have one, they only get one.

While I have shot Aimpoint's I am not really that familiar with them but when you push NV on your EoTech it's an IR reticle so it won't flare up your night vision system as bad. Thats the only reason I can think of why you see that but my guess is NV compatible aimpoints have the same feature.

Hey RW,
The "one" on the rifle is $3500 and the "one" on the helmet is $3500.
I'm still saying "ouch" for "ONE" at all!

Hi coloshootr,
Yes, both Aimpoint and Eotech make NV compatible models. That's why I am puzzled why I have never seen a photo of an Aimpoint mounted on a rifle with NV, which is sort of what I started out asking.
I am so appreciative that sometimes threads get taken a little bit off-topic; you can learn so much more that way!
Jerry.

I agree to the ouch comment. I didn't like paying for the first one, but considered it good insurance.
IF I was going out at night and IF I knew someone wanted to kill me. I would setup my rifle with one and my helmet with one and have an IR laser.
People talk about the military guns. This round being better than that round. HK being better than an M4. I would rather see the grunt on the ground have the best night vision, thermal vision, IR lasers, regular lasers.....

As current state of the art is, most grunts (Army infantry) have either the PAQ4 or PEQ2 IR laser, a PVS 14 NVG on their head, a Surefire for closer ranges, and thermals are here and there (we had them in the desert, handheld or vehicle mounted at times).
They're well equipped with all the toys.
If you have the IR laser the need for one on the rifle generally goes away. If you see it in your NVG on your head, lase the target and fire. You will hit it.

Thanks gasrings,
This is almost exactly what I've been daydreaming about.
I ordered a GG&G mount for the PVS14 though, and I'm not sure if the aimpoint mount would need to be a GG&G to match the height or not? I see that the Aimpoint mount in the photo above is a LaRue.
Anyway, that's the first photo I've ever come across showing a monocular and an Aimpoint.... usually see the Eotechs in the photos....
I have to find someone around my area with an Eotech to try before I can make the decision myself...
Thanks,
Jerry.
