View Full Version : Steel Matches In Pueblo
Starting on the 7th, the weekly Steel Challenge matches start up again in Pueblo.
Show up anytime between 4:00 and 6:30 and we will get you shooting.
Bring 100-ish (75-80 max required if you dont miss) rounds and plan on spending 30-45 minutes to shoot the match.
And its cheap. $10.
Game on tonight...
Get out there and shoot some. You will be surprised how much you learn.
25+ people there Wednesday night. Several of them shooting more than one gun. Plenty of 22s being used this season.
Results went out last night. Let me know if you didnt get them.
34 people this week. Where were you...?
The plate rack tomorrow will have 6 pesky poppers.
Squeeze...
43 people showed up last night.
They just kept coming.
Set-up started around 3:30 and we were shooting by 4:00. Some people didnt get there untill 6:30. They still had plenty of time to shoot the match.
5 of the shooters were women.
What evenings during the week are you holding these? I work down that way once in a while and want to check it out. I'll be in the Springs Tues the 15th headed to Walsenburg. Will probably spend the night in Pueblo so I'm hoping you're shooting that evening. I saw the ammo reccomendations. How about firearms, pistol/rifle? Caliber?
Thanks - Chris
We shoot every Wednesday afternoon/evening until late Sept.
Most guys shoot a 9 or a 40. I shoot a 9, 22 and my shotgun. Sometimes my 9mm AR-15.
Common guns are 1911s, Glocks, a few CZs and some M&Ps.
Blade Tech and Uncle Mikes are the common holsters.
Bring 100-125 rounds and you will be fine. Minimum round count, if you go one for one, is right at 70 rounds. You can keep your brass or leave it behind for the brass rats.
And there was about 25 people yesterday.
Matches still going strong *every* Wednesday afternoon. 25-35 people there every week.
Dont be afraid of what you might learn.
Its not an IPSC match, its not an IDPA match. All you have to do is hit the plates. No taping targets, no setting steel back up, minimal standing around. In fact the whole match has been shot in under 20 minutes by a guy that showed up late and was the only guy left to shoot.
Another match is on for today. Rain or shine.
Anyone besides Charlie man enough?
The Wednesday afternoon / evening matches for 2009 have started.
You guys are missing out. Its cheap. $10 to shoot a match and see how good you really are.
Hello Hozer,
I saw your post about the steel matches in Pueblo. Where in Pueblo? I would be headed down from Denver. Any one else interested in car pooling? Seems like a long shot from looking at the replies here. Probably wont make it tonight due to work schedule but would be interested next Wed.
Thanks!
These are held at the Pueblo West Sportsmans Assn in Pueblo West. To mapquest/GPS it, look up 600 Loma Drive Pueblo West CO 81007
A grand total of 3 members from here have come out to shoot these matches. Sad really. I guess its easier to look like an awesome shooter on the internet than it is to actually get out there and do it...
Im not an awesome shooter by any means of the word. Really, Im brand new. I would love to come down to check it out and try my hand!
I plan on showing up for next wed. I'll also plan on a 2.5 to 3 hour drive to get there through Denver and Colo Sp. rush hour traffic.
See you there! :)
Oh Hoser :crying:
Why are you torturing me like this!!!
Here is sit in DJ, (on TDY from Liberia) dreaming of shooting steel on Wednesdays!
But the countdown calendar says - 68 days till I'll be there with Glocks on! :snoopy:
Oh - and you might want to stand clear - it's will have been 300 days since my last match...
FG - Have Laptop, Will Travel
OH - and for anyone who's not tried it - this is a great way to just have fun! A .22, some ammo and just 10 bucks is all you need. I take the Girlfriend down and she even likes it!! So come join the fun. And if you show up early you can even help set up!! Talk about a deal!!!!
There's nothing like the ding ding ding of shooting steel with a .22!
I had a great first match experience. I met some good people and learned that I need more practice. Thanks again Hozer! :wavey:

Glad you know you had a good time. Thanks again for helping with setting things up. Next time I hope you dad decides to play with us.
Good to know you came away thinking you need more practice instead of the "I will never be that good" attitude. Trigger time is trigger time. In the big scheme of things, its training.
Scott, hope to see you soon. Keep you head down and have a Tusker for me. Remember, me like coffee from Dira Dowa.
Results from yesterdays match just went out. Let me know if you didnt get them.
Tomorrow is the last chance to knock some of that rust off before this weekends Mile High Showdown in Greeley or the Regional Sportsmans Team Challenge in Raton.
See you there.
Only a few matches left for 2009.
Hope to see some of you out there.
After today there is only two matches left.
Be there by 5:30 and we will get you shooting.

what are prairie dog matches?
what are prairie dog matches?
Life size, self resetting, steel prarie dogs that we shoot under time constraints from 200-425 yards. You have 15 seconds to take a single shot. Hit or miss the target is considered gone. You dont get to keep shooting till you hit it.
No penalities for misses, you just dont earn any points.
40 rounds total required. Not going to break the bank.
Lots of 223 and 22-250s out there. A few 243s (me) 260s and 308s.
So far no perfect scores.
Lots of info and pics are here. http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6763
Let me know if you have any more questions. I think only two GT members have shown up. Wolffo and CDrissel. Wolffo never came back and CDrissel is a regular.
Its not easy, but not impossible either.

How are the steel matches scored? Do you have to be a member of the shooting range to compete?

Its all about time.
If it takes you 20 seconds to hit the targets, then 20 seconds is your time for the stage.
We run 4 stages each match. Each stage has 5 targets. You shoot each stage 3 times and we throw away your worst time.
Minimum round count is under 100.
You do *not* have to be a member of Pueblo West to shoot in the matches. Part of your match fee goes directly to the host range as you are my guest.
