View Full Version : Problems with Mossbert 930 tactical.
I tried one of these today and had the following problems:
1. Loaded the mag and the follower got stuck part way down and would not feed shells to the elevator. We took the mag extension apart and oiled the inside of it.
2. Three times, while topping off the mag with a round in the chamber, a shell got stuck on the elevator leaving one round in the chamber and one in the receiver somewhat on the elevator. This effectively jammed the gun but we were able to get the shell out in about 30 to 60 seconds.
Anyone know what would cause this? Defective gun or user error?
1. Burr on the magazine follower or kink in magzine spring causing the hang up.
If this went away after you diassembled and lubricated the mag tube, you may have solved the problem.
2. Burr or fouling causing the shell latch to remain out farther than it should be causing the shell to drag on the shell latch as it enters the receiver.
Try removing the trigger group and shell latch and clean, degrease, and check for burrs.
Lubricate with light grease and reassemble. HTH

Check the mag tube for dents, specificaly the extension, I read about some being dented from mossberg and causeing feeding problems, mine has a small dent\nick but Ive not had a problem.
I loaded and unloaded it again several times w/o any problems. I am wondering if I caused the jams, during unloading, by not pushing the elevator far enough up while pushing the shell release button, thereby causing the shell to go on top of the elevator, and then failed to pull the bolt handle sharply enough to properly eject the shell in the chamber.

That sounds like it could be a cause. I'll have to inspect mine for such a defect.

No nicks or dents in the mag tube or extension but I can see & feel a slight weld line in the Choate extension. It worked fine today for 120 rounds and the tubes still have a light coat of oil in them.

Call mossberg man thats all i can think of. They have a good customer service reputation. See if they have any ideas or will trade you out.

I sent them an e-mail. Did you ever try 3 in. mags in yours?
I like this gun but with full power 00 buck loads (2 & 3/4 in.) it walks off target in rapid fire and I cannot effectively fire it any faster than my 870.

Never tried 3" before in the 930 I dont keep many around, rant 10 throgh my 590 out camping and it ruined my damn weekend lol. I have only shot a few buck rounds out of my 930 the rest birdshot. I just havnt had much time to get out and shoot.
Mossberg answered my e-mail today. They told me to check the gas ports in the barrel to make sure they are not blocked & to call them if that did not work. I really don't want to have to send it to them.
Do you have an aftermarket magazine follower? I had several that I got when I sent my 500 off to Vang Comp. They installed a plastic day glo green follower that would bind up after putting a couple of rounds in the magazine. I advised Vang of this and he sent me several that were turned down a few thousandths, problem solved. Evidently the followers worked well in 870s, but not Mossbergs, if you have an aftermarket follower that might be your problem.
It worked today with Remington 3 in. slugs. I guess it was the ammo last time (Federal 3 inch 0 and 00 buck.) Follower is stock. It did not seem to stick after I lubed the mag tube & extension.
The recoil caused the nut on my new Choate mag clamp to come undone and I lost the clamp w/o knowing it until I got home.

Me too!

It was a waste/loss of $10.00 + s&h. I owned it for about 2 weeks.
I sent Fred Choate an e-mail saying he might want to consider including an anti-vibration washer to go under the nut that holds the bracket together. I have a bracket from Tank's Rifle Shop that has been on my 870 for about 19 years. It has not come off but it has one of those inexpensive star shaped anti-vibration washers on it. I intended to buy one for the Choate bracket but did not remember to before I shot it.

You guys post a link to this "mag clamp" ? I might buy one.

Check the Choate web site at http://www.riflestock.com and look under "sling swivel base clamp" They have it listed twice as 1 and 2. One of them is parkerized and one is blued but I don't know which. Choate told me the one that fits the 870 will also fit the 930 and it did. It is the same clamp he includes with his extension. Mossberg apparently cut some costs by leaving the clamp out. I bought mine from Brownell's, same price but they have a cheap S&H rate for 1 item and their site tells you which one is park'd and which is blued. Not sure of the S&H from Choate. If you do buy one of these you might want to loc-tite the nut or buy one of the star shaped anti-vibration washers from your local hardware store so your does not fall off like mine did. Be aware that you will need to remove the clamp whenever you remove the barrel & mag extension to clean the gun.
I think the next clamp I buy will be from Tank's Rifle Shop (also on the web at www.tanksrifleshop.com) But his costs $29.95 and is out of stock now. I like his clamp better as it seems sturdier. His site has photo's of the 2 clamps, one above the other, so you can visually compare them. I already have one of Tank's on my 870.
I'd really like one with a pic-rail and bayonet mount like the one TacticalShotgunner.com sells but theirs is too expensive ($89.00!!)

They look good, sturdy and better than the one from Choate. Where did you get them and how much? Also, what is a Limbsaver?

Limbsaver Is the recoil pad,The original didn't do much.
I found the clamp at the gun show. The 11/87 has a recess in the tube for the screw to go through to keep it located in the same spot I had to elongate the non threaded side to bring it up a little to clear the extension.
This one fits good and tight I like it.
That's how I want mine to fit. How does your 930 compare to your 11-87?

930 is much lighter tend to be more lightweight minded so I grab it more. With the Limbsaver the kick seems minimal.
