Hello all.. I am new to this area of glock talk but I was hoping to ask a few "black rifle" related questions.
1. I am in the market for a AR-15 to fill the role of a Varmit/Range Plinker, I am pretty sold on .223 as a caliber. right now I have my eye on anything with a 18-20ish inch barrell
2. I would also like to have a black rifle for a SHTF/ZOMBIE attack/HD role as well.
The question is... Can I buy a target model such as Stag model 6 or RRA Varmit EOP and then buy a "M4" style upper with the shorter barrell (maybe the 14-16 inch variety) and have the dual function of both? Would I have to buy an upper that is the same brand as the lower that I purchased? What challenges might I expect by doing this?
thanks for your time... sorry if its a NOOB question... I searched around but didnt find anything real specific...
Why not buy a mid-length and use it for varmint hunting, plinking, etc., etc., .... I use my middy for everything. My 20" is just a yote gun. I also prefer my middy. And yes you can interchange uppers.

so mid length is considered 16"????
A mid length upper has a 16 inch barrel, but the gas port is much further forward, and I THINK in the same place as a 20" rifle. A carbine/M4 has the shorter system, and well, looks like an M4 carbine with a lot of barrel ahead of the sight tower and handguards.
But yes, you can swap the uppers back and forth as you see fit. A lot of people do this.

Wrong. What is known as a "mid length" has a gas system with a length in between rifle length and carbine length. The mid length ARs I have owned and seen have a gass tube approximately two inches longer than a carbine's tube.

For a range piece/varmint gun the 20" will work fine. The shorter barrel definitely comes in handy for room to room work, but with a collapsible stock, half of the M16 size rifle's disadvantages are gone. You can work around a 20" barrel if you have to. You shouldn't be clearing buildings alone anyways, much less alone with a rifle. I do it daily and with rare exceptions, it's with a partner.

I use my M4gery for varmint hunting. All of my AR15's are setup first and foremost for self/home defense. But I still use them for other things and they do great.

So what would you suggest ??? Buy a nice "built" rifle like the DPMS MK 12, or Colt HBAR Elite style or buy more of a entry level rifle like RRA entry tactical type"???
Right now I have about 1000 to spend... I think I can live with a mid length rifle... suggestions?

If you want a middy, then DPMS and Colt are out as they don't make one.
Armalite, RRA, Del-ton, Sabre Defense, CMMG make middy's

I'd get an M4gery and just use it for all your AR15 needs.
I like the middy. My RRA loves to hunt and play!! Besides the middy is sexy!!

+1, but get it with a 16inch barrel.
I am thinking that will solve most of your needs.
If for some reason, you don't get the accuracy you want from that setup, you will know what you will want in the premium/SPR/target rifle.

The lower is the least expensive major part of a rifle, tho' it is the 'item of record'.
Don't think I'd get too hung up on having just one receiver; you can always add another later.

Maybe, it depends on where you live and what the gov. decides you can have.

ADS now offers mid-length rifles.
No need to get a long barreled gun for varmint.
Adding a free-float quad rail like the Danial Defense Omega or Midwest Industries offering should improve the accuracy. These rails are easily installed. The DD Omega requires no modification of the firearms and no special tools to install.

And what bullsnot new regs they invent, I suppose. Many of us assume that new bans will look like the old ones, and of course that may or may not be true.

The only good news I see is the degree of fear the libs have for us gunnies...it hasn't been that long since '94.
Also, a whole bunch of black rifles have been sold since the ban expired, making them harder to ban.

We cannot get complacent. We have a small amount of momentum right now. I don't see a ban coming on if we keep educating and teaching our friends/family/colleagues about shooting. Keep buying AR15's and other evil rifles.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Keep the anti's on the run.

I saw something on the Chicago news tonight.
The teenagers have been brain washed that all guns are illegal and they are trying to ban them.
With stuff like this going on, I expect a total ban to happen in my life time.
Buy what you want now, Use it, Enjoy it.
Get real good with it, because you might need to use it to protect your rights in the future.

Hollywood and the lefties (could be a rock group!) keep pushing the antigun agenda.
They also keep cranking out movies where the heros use guns...
Which message comes through the loudest?
Agreed that complacency is not a good idea, but we're not beaten by a long shot.
If we let it get down to us trading shots with the JBTs, we're screwed anyhow.
It's a battle we have to win politically.
Keep your powder dry!

Agreed. I would much rather win it peacefully, and I don't think it's beyond that at this point. In fact, like I stated, I think we have momentum.
Look at all the states that allow CCW now compared to 20 years ago. Doesn't it seem as if the SCOTUS is likely going to rule in favor of the 2nd amendment and not in favor of political ideology?
Look at the proliferation of AR15's. Most of the bigger AR15 companies are pumping out thousands of AR15's every month, each and have been since the end of the AWB. There's a reason that the AR15 is getting so popular, people like having the right to own these.
I feel like we have some momentum. I am not saying that we should not keep fighting every potential gun grabbing law tooth and nail. I am simply saying that we should not be playing defense all the time or think we are fighting for a losing cause. I want to play some offense, we can be proactive about getting good gun friendly laws in place. We can make a positive change if gun owners unite together and fight diligently. We are a force to be rekonned with.
Share shooting with all the people you meet. I've not met many anti-gunners who are experienced and educated on the subject.

Since this thread has wandered off anyway,
+1 on RMT's remarks, and yes, take people shooting.
Belong/give to the NRA.
Speak up when you get a chance with people who are rational...how much chance of us being talked into an anti-gun position? But there are open minded folks who are willing to listen; talk to them about our point of view.
VOTE!
I know, preaching to the choir. Sorry.

Midlength refers to the gas system, and not the barrel length. Most midlengths are 16 or 18" in length. A 16" barreled carbine gives up a little velocity, but is no less accurate than its longer barreled siblings. I have both, and find I grab the 16" most of the time.
