I'm pretty excited about starting this build, this if my first AR-15.
I picked up 2 CMMG stripped lowers today and a DPMS parts kit. The first one I am building is going to be a Carbine length. The second one will probably be the varmint style with bull barrel and a 2 stage trigger.
thanks to all of those who gave me advice on my first build.... I will post picks as more parts roll in... I still haven't decided on a upper yet.... right now I have my eye on the RRA Tactical CAR A4.

RRA makes a good upper but I would get a LMT.

Where is the best place to buy a LMT?
I got mine from Denny at GTS but there is a guy here on GT that has the lowest price I have seen anywhere. I don't recall his name but I'm sure someone knows who I'm talking about. I got mine from GTS because I was ordering a bunch of other stuff at the same time.

It looks like Pacific Gun Sales sells the upper for $450 + $8.95 shipping, but that does not include a charging handle or hand guards. If you want those, you're looking at $520.85 shipped.
I would suggest Rainier Arms (http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=358). Their price includes hand guards and a charging handle for $491.95 shipped.

excellent start! I vote for the LMT upper as well, excellent uppers and the finish should match well too. Keep us updated on the builds!

Great start
Make sure you properly support the trigger housing when you install the trigger guard roll pin. The pin in the DPMS kit has been reported to be slightly oversize and it goes in hard, but it does work if you are careful

I use the channel lock/vice grip method. Works very well. I didn't have any issues with my DMPS build.

Use a carbine spring and buffer.
You can buy a properly staked bolt/carrier herehttp://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=145
and a charging handlehttp://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=146
you will get some other goodies in the box from LaRue that make it worthwhile:supergrin:

I don't recall you talking about sights (or a scope)
and you need mass quantities of AMMO

dude , I have no sights... jeez I figured I could pick up some BUIS on the cheap.. but man.... spendy everywhere I look....
anyone got a lead on some cheapo iron sights?
I might get a high dollar optic someday down the road.... but for now my budget will probably only fit iron sights.

you can't get quality BUIS much cheaper unless you get Chinese knockoffs or AirSoft crap.
Normally I would go with a carry handle, but you need a front gas block mount sight also, and that pushes the price up
