I recently purchased a red dot sight for my Saiga 223 carbine and my brother-in-law noticed something about it as we were checking it out.
If you move your head the dot moves off target...it's like you must be perfectly lined up with your eyeball looking straight through the sight glass or your shot will be off.
Is this normal for red dots???because I had no idea this would be how they would be!

OR...did I just get a junky one? It was only around $50...name brand though...I believe it's a Simmons.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

With an Aimpoint, inside 50m the dot must be centered in the scope. Past that, as long as the dot is on the target, no matter where the dot appears to actually be, it will hit. So I have been told by our CATM guys, but since we mostly shoot 25m simulated 300m targets, it's hard to double check.

To test for parallax error, set the sight on something solid and look through it. Move your head side to side and up and down, taking the dot to the extreme edges. If it stays in the same spot on the target then you're good to go. Try it at different distances, from 100 yards on in. Extreme close range will cause parallax error in even the most expensive sights, but they're usually acceptable beyond 10 yards.

I had a cheap red dot sight once that had 8" of parallax in any direction at 25 yards, which made it completely useless.
