Act Now! FOP aims to seize your rights

By Jim Irvine

The Ohio FOP will be holding a press conference on Wednesday to protest Ohio’s law abiding citizens' firearms rights. Date and time are yet to be announced, but they have made it clear that they will do whatever they can to prevent your rights from being restored.

While the vast majority of the rank and file officers support you and your rights, the FOP, led by their Legislative Chairman Mike Drum, does not. This extreme and out of touch organization is brow beating your legislature and Governor over an amendment that restores your rights.

How extreme is the FOP? They insist that you need a concealed carry license to transport a handgun in your car. Consider this sentence from their letter:

"Furthermore, with the proposed changes pertaining to transportation of a firearm in a motor vehicle (lines 64-67) anyone, including unlicensed persons, can transport a firearm in a motor vehicle as long as it is not on their person. (Emphasis in original) "

Oh, the humanity. Unlicensed persons could transport a firearm in a car! Never mind that was how the law worked for decades before HB12 (Ohio’s concealed carry law) became effective in 2004. No one ever intended to remove the right to transport in a car, it was a drafting error that caused that problem. Even Toby Hoover has never proposed anything so crazy. These are your tax dollars at work.

The FOP is crying about the Katrina provision, aimed at stopping door to door seizures of your firearms, such as happened after hurricane Katrina. That opposition should scare the hell out of every law abiding gun owner in the country. If you have never been involved in this fight before, now is the time.

The FOP claims that CHL’s are an officer safety issue, although they can’t cite one instance of Ohio’s 100,000 plus license holders being a danger to any officer in any traffic stop in over four years.

Until four years ago, business owners (including establishments where liquor was served) could carry in their business with no license; they could also grant permission to others. Now the FOP argues that even off duty officers are dangerous in such businesses, and owners should not be able to hire them for security.

The FOP is an elitist group working extremely hard to steal your rights. You will see them in the media soon. They have been talking to your legislature, and too many of them are listening to their “Chicken Little” hysteria.

You need to contact your legislature immediately and encourage them to disregard the rantings of the FOP. The FOP had their chance to have their ideas heard, but chose to remain silent. They have NEVER responded to our request for feedback. Looking at their objections, it seems they know their arguments can not be defended. Their only path to “victory” is to throw fear grenades at the last minute, knowing there is not enough time to research the truth. This tactic has worked for them in the past – don’t let it happen again.

We need you to stand with us (literally) at the Ohio Statehouse. The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21 at 9:30AM in Room 121. Any gun owner who does not step up in some manor now, is enabling the anti-gunners to win. Don’t be the gun grabber’s friend.

Make sure your Representative and Senator are educated on the issue. Time is running short.

If there is any way you or anyone you know can get to the statehouse tomorrow morning, it is of critical importance. The back room dealings are reaching a fevered pitch and certain LEO groups are scheduling a press conference to continue their attempt to gut some excellent Pro-Gun amendments being circulated. We need to make a huge showing at the House committee meeting tomorrow at 9:30.

If you have any questions about the where and when call me at 614-499-7725

Had I know about this earlier, I could have helped out in some capacity. I read the 'sky is falling' article in The Dispatch, and was disturbed by the slant and tone of the article.

What can I do to help now?

Joe you can call your rep or email him. Tell them you want HB 182 passed with BFA's amendment now.

Also if you're in columbus you can attend the 2nd hearing in the morning. the bs from the FOP, BSA AND OPA was thick let me tell you.

"Well what if a perfectly law abiding citizen with a chl suddenly goes on a mrth binge and decides to shoot a cop"

That statement was the norm for the anti's.

Never ending FOP = Communism

Mainly their upper ranking board members are to blame, not representing the attitudes of the rank and file troops in the field!

If you are a constituent of one of the House Criminal Justice Committee members below, Buckeye Firearms Association and all pro-gun Ohioans need you to make a polite phone call to your Representative and respectfully ask them to support the BFA/NRA amendments to S.B. 184. A vote could come as soon as tomorrow.

The main changes we are fighting to win for Ohioans are as follows:

1) Establish a clear standard for what constitutes a "loaded firearm." The Ohio House wants to eliminate the "ready at hand" vagueness that has trapped many gun owners and hunters in Ohio. The FOP is opposing this because they claim it would allow "... anyone to carry a gun in a car (non-permit holders) if it is not loaded and no ammunition is in a magazine or speed loader." Since both the Ohio and US constitutions guarantee us this right, it is not the FOP's place to object to this right for all law abiding Ohioans.

2) Provide protection from confiscation of firearms during disaster and other emergencies. This is what other states are calling "Katrina Legislation" and is designed to prevent the wholesale confiscation of lawfully owned firearms such as was seen in New Orleans after the Katrina disaster. The FOP is attempting to derail this important protection to your firearm and property rights.

3) Allow lawful carry of firearms in establishments with a class D6 liquor permit. This type of permit allows sale of liquor on Sunday and includes most Krogers, Ameristops, and Giant Eagle type of businesses. Fixes are also being considered to allow owners of restaurants and bars to carry concealed as well as allow special duty police to carry in such establishments. The FOP has objected to this.

4) Make changes to the notification of officers by CHL holders. The penalty to a CHL for failure to notify (such as after a traffic accident or other highly stressful situation) would be reduced if the status of the CHL holder was already known to the officer. No more making criminals out of honest Ohioans simply because they were subject to a traumatic event and failed to inform an officer of something the officer was already aware of. The FOP has objected to this as well.

5) Other important changes include:

· Allow transportation of loaded handguns in unlocked glove compartments or center consoles, as long as they are closed

· Prevent sheriffs from considering sealed or expunged convictions in background checks to determine license eligibility

· Provide mandatory attorney fees for a person who successfully secures the return of a seized firearm through legal action

· Prohibit eviction from apartments due to lawfully owning a firearm
