I picked this up today. I got it from my father-in-law, along with a good bit of reloading supplies. He bought it new in the mid-70's, and says he has fired probably about 200 rounds or less. It is in 7x57 Mauser, has a Burris 3-9x40 Fullfield II scope, mounted in Conetrol rings/bases.

Anyone with knowledge about the Steyr Mannlicher care to comment on it, especially on the markings and stampings?

i have an MS model 1956 in 30-06. double triggers. yours is either a model 69 or 72, i would guess. probably a 72 based on the 74 stamp. they are hunting machines. you have a good rifle there. wish i had money to make you an offer. i would load that thing up with 175 hornady round nosers and RL22 with data from the speer #14 reloading manual and let the fur fly. that is one heck of a rifle. take good care of it.

Since the original posting, I have switched out to a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36 scope. I personally find it better performing and more aesthetically pleasing.

I also loaded up an assortment of bullet weights and powders. It definitely seems to prefer the heavier bullets. For once, I was glad I had a "witness" at the range, as my trial group with Hornady 162 SST over H-4831 went into .40" at 100 yards. Most other loads were around/slightly under 1".
