View Full Version : what are the differences between colts 1991 and 1911 models?
just wondering im looking to pick up a colt
I imagine you are looking at Colt GI models.
The 1991 utilizes Colt's series 80 design, while the classic 1911 GI model uses the more valuable series 70 design. The series 80 incorporated a firing pin block, which is supposed to stop the pistol from firing when dropped. The 1991A1 model is actually Colt's economy GI using the series 80 design. Its named after the year it was introduced.
Series 70 is the older design, but still produced today and are normally a good deal more desirable and valuable than the series 80.
im looking at 2 different models, they are both series 80 guns. one is rollmarked 1991 and the other is rollmarked 1911

The series 80 was introduced in 1983. Many of the 1911s Colt produced were series 80. The 1991 came in, well, 1991 and was a lower cost model.
Here, maybe this will help. Are you looking at standard GI models?

Yes, the XSE line are series 80. I thought you were speaking about the GI models (not enhanced like the XSE).
so would you know if there are any differences in metal/parts, im aware of the differences in the blueing of the 1991 and the series 80 guns but is the stainless finishes different? pricepoint seems to be really close and if im recalling correctly there was a much larger spread in price between the 2 models some years back.

I don't see why the finishes would be different. I don't think they are.
so does anyone know the real skinny ?

What else do you need to know?
As far as I know the finish on a stainless Colt 1911 is the same as the finish on a stainless Colt 1991.
You could always call Colt. I've talked with them before and they have decent service. I'm sure they could answer any question you may have.

I know I bought a 1991 Commander and it has had more surgery than Joan Collins , to try and make it Run well. I bought 2 of them actually the first one wouldn't even finish a magazine.
Get the 1911 I upgraded for a Mk IV ser 80 in Stainless, and have been extremely pleased with it.
I would check a Colt over VERY thoroughly before purchase, moreso than a Kimber or Springer, because they will General Motors you in a heart beat.
