View Full Version : Modding my 35 for limited?

I shoot my 35 in limited major and would like to hear what the most common/basic mods out there are in this class for glocks. I can't really get a grasp on whats out there and what works from the shooters at the competitions as there is only two other glock shooters that I have seen and only one in limited. (I'm in AK) Right now I'm not reloading so I shoot factory ammo, is there a particular brand that is known for having lighter recoil? My main areas of concern are speed (both reloads and follow up shots) and recoil reduction. Thanks in advance for any help.

i have heinie fixed rear sight, dawson FO front, NHO stainless magwell, KKM barrel. THE guide rod & wolf 14# spring. i did just a little trigger work. i intend to get the slide lightened and coated after i get another gun i have ordered to replace the g22 with. i have arredondo extensions on a couple mags. i use a CR speed rig. most everything i use came from
http://www.bb-enterprise.biz/

edit: i forgot i have a big head mag release, can't remember where it came from, glock extended slide stop but i never use it to drop the slide. the NHO mag wells cost a bit more than most but besides the functional aspect of it the SS mag well is heavier and for me adding weight to the parts that don't move makes more sense.

i shoot a 24 in limited .i prefer the dawson ice mag well .also i like the dawson fiber front with plain black rear i have adjustable.but i think plain is just as good just a little harder to adjust.the dawson mag extension are pretty nice i end up getting 19 rounds some can get 20 in but there really tight not so reliable for me.ammo i used to shoot the sellior and bellot and it was much softer then the pmc that i shot .now i reload and load 170 laser cast swc.have also went with kkm barrel shoots very well.usally aroung 168 thousand power factor.hopes this helps .zac

Are tungsten guide rods and brass mag wells legal in limited? I've been thinking about the THE Tungsten captive guid rod, and the ICE heavy brass magwell, but the rules state no external mods/weights. I take it these don't fall under that category?

It sounds like you are reading "IPSC" rules & not the "USPSA" rules. My g35 has a KKM barrel, tungsten guide rod, THE magwell, & part of a Vanek trigger. The grip has been epoxied & rolled in small gravel for a beter grip surface, & I have Truglo fibers front & rear. I like the gun a lot & after I got rid of the Ti firing pin it had in it when I bought it, the gun has been very reliable.

i think when they say weight they mean a weight attached to the gun, not a part that adds weight. you'd have to ask someone better versed in the rules than me.

I had the same question before the area 2 match. The answer directly from USPSA Headquarters: "Yeah, that's ok".

I started off shooting USPSA in limited 10 with a 35. I added a fiber optic front sight, tungsten guide rod w/15# recoil spring and an extended mag release button. (watch out for barricades on the left side, I bumped one and hit the extended mag release, dropping the mag out in the middle of a course one time):wow:

Later I moved to limited when I added a magwell and +5 bases on hi-cap mags. I never had anyone give me any grief about the accessories i was running.

Follow the link below and you can find out what the official USPSA rules allow.

http://www.uspsa.org/rules/2008HandgunRulesindexed.pdf

On my Limited G-35, I have the following:

Stormlake Machine barrel (I shoot cast bullets)

Dawson Adjustable sights (fiber optic front)

"THE" brass magazine well

Home made trigger job

Stippled grip

Dawson magazine springs and extensions

Your ammunition must make a power factor of 165 to be scored "Major" the USPSA rules expalin how power factor is determined. I think Winchester White Box 180 grain 40 caliber should make major in your G-35.

The G35 is quite competitive as it comes from the box...

(MIne has a set of TFO sights, and +5 basepads...the rest must be up to me!

G35 + grip tape + 25 cent trigger job + decent sights + a couple of extended base pads + practice of good technique = Grand Master

I try to push the limit of my G35. Currently:

-Vanek Classic Grand Master, which changes the entire trigger assembly, firing pin assembly, and all springs
-KKM barrel
-T.H.E. Accessories Tungsten guide rod w/ 15# ISMI Springs
-Dawson ICE magwell w/ arrendondo extensions

I am taking a break for the next 3 weeks :steamed:, because I just sent my slide to get burried BoMar sights and front serrations installed.

BoMar is now out of business (tragically) so stock up on the best sights made while you can. Even Brownells is out!

But, many posters are right, "it is not the bow, but the Indian behind it," so I am bummed that I won't be practicing for a couple of weeks...

If you're handy you can make guide rods out of full length 1911 rods. Round the butt end and slim it so it will take ISMI recoil springs. Uncaptured makes it easier to tailor the recoil spring.

Three questions...

Does anyone have a link for "THE" ? That's an impossible name to Google.

Do any of the magwells fill the half-moon cutout on the front of a G35 (etc) grip?

Ignoring the magwell for the moment, do any of the extended base pads fill the half-moon cutout on the front of a G35 grip? Pearce has a replacement base plate but that does not add any rounds.

Not much. It isn't the heavy magwell, just the regular one. It does open it up great for fumbled mag changes. Dawson does sell a heavyweight one that is supposed to do that. http://cpwsa.com/Dawson_Precision.htm

I am shooting it stock right now. Will add grip tape and a 15# spring. I do shoot it in production also. I put together a 34, but still like my 35.

What are the opinions on the mag extensions? I know nothing about Arredondo. A good friend of mine (master class limited) said he has seen Dawson extensions spontaneously combust during stages including Todd Jarrett at a Limited Nationals. He told me to go with Gramms Engineering. Said he has had no problems whatsoever with them, of course he's running an STI. I emailed Gramms and he told me he's not making them for Glock right now but will be in a couple of months. Should I wait for them or go with another, maybe Dawson? Also what guide rod are you guys running with the 14# Wolff recoil springs?

Dawson pads are rock solid and robust.
