I'm building (have just about built) my ideal carry pistol. Commander-sized 1911 on a Caspian frame with slim grips in 9mm. All I need is sights and she'll be done.

I've got about 1000 rounds of FMJ through the pistol, and I figured it was broken in enough to start trying some JHP. My personal choice in a 9mm defensive round is the 147gr Doubletap +P round.

It functioned flawlessly EXCEPT for the first round. About 50% of the time it would fail to feed when hand-cycling; the round nosed into the feed ramp and stuck. It's a standard-barrel configuration 1911 with 2-piece feed ramp.

Again, out of 200 rounds, I had NO problems except with hand-cycling the rounds. Reloading and dropping the slide with the lever didn't work. Slingshotting the slide worked about half the time. If I loaded a WWB FMJ as the first round in the mag, the rest of it shot fine. If I only loaded 1 or 2 of the DoubleTaps into the mag, it worked fine. Magazines are brand-new Kimber 9mm mags.

I'm not happy with the compromise idea of having the top round in a mag be FMJ. I was thinking I could try to go find some of those FMJ/JHP rounds that are supposed to be closer in profile to ball, any suggestions? Other than that I'm pretty much out of ideas. I don't really want to go ramped barrel, for the cost I might as well sell the pistol and start over.

How about a Corbon Pow-r-ball? Even the notoriously JHP picky CZ 97B of my dad's fed them.

Winchester Silver Tips are pretty ball-like also, but have an actual cavity.

I'd be willing to bet a different mag would fix it. Take a look at Tripp Research or Metalform.

its suppose to be a 45 1911 doesn't like being a 9mm It was ment to be a grown up bullet
Use the Corbon power ball that works fine in my 9mm commander

Remington Golden Sabres are probably the closest to ball as far as normal JHPs go. I have a picky .45 that will feed them 100% and won't even think about digesting anything else.

Thanks for the helpful comment. I have had several .45's, and for a number of reasons I prefer the 9mm, the biggest being that I shoot it much better. I'm accurate with .45acp in slow fire, but I have trouble getting consistent double taps. I handle the recoil of the 9mm better. I considered .38 super for a while, but decided against it for cost reasons, something I may revisit later if I ever get into reloading.

I bought some Hi-Shoks yesterday, they seem a bit rounder, we'll see how they work.

I have noticed that the old Hi-shock looks a LOT like the new HST in design just it has few scoring marks on the jacket.

I don't know what that means for feeding reliability, just thought it was interesting that the HST seems to be almost like they went backwards from the Hydra-shock.

I am sure Federals EFMJ would work.

I think the Federal plain JHP - now sold as Hi Shok - is about the roundest on the market, except maybe Remington Golden Sabre. The Federal 9BPLE is well thought of if you want more speed.

I handload Remington bulk JHPs for practice, they are pretty close in profile to the Federals.

+1 on that! Wilson Combat has one out now, and that is what I would try first.

I noticed you edit this out of my post when I said make it a 45.
Use the Corbon power ball that works fine in my 9mm commander

See I have one also

Dont know if you can still get them over there, Remington made a standard 115gr hollowpoint, even a +P version that was clocking around 1250 in my guns. Not as hot as the Cor-Bon but certianly faster than standard.
But why I'm mentioning it, the profile was quite round and fed in all 9mm's I tried it in.

The Golden Saber in 9mm is pretty 'roundish'....in .40SW and some other calibers it has a pretty ugly sharp/angled nose but the 9mm 124gr +p fed well in all my guys' guns (SIG, Glock, SW, Steyr, Ruger).

I had a Springfield Loaded 9mm 1911....good GAWD that thing choked on even some types of FMJ ammo. Different mags (Metalform, SA, Kimber, MecGar...tried them all) didn't fix it either....yet another 1911 that required serious work to get it from 'out of the box unreliable' to going 'bang' each time the trigger was pulled.

The Federal 9BP and 9BPLE use the same bullet, and both have a pretty smooth profile. Both are available online for pretty good prices.

Wilson Combat now offers a 9mm stainless 1911 mag, so if you're up for the Great Magazine Experiment, I'd give it a try.

It's supposed to be a .45. 1911's don't like being a 9mm. It was meant to be a grown-up bullet. Use the Corbon Power- Ball. It works fine in my 9mm Commander.

Fixed it for ya! :)
