I was talking to my friend this morning. She and family were transferred to the Dallas area back in late 2004.

She took her 13 yr old daughter to a new Pediatrician a few months ago. Doc was asking the daughter some questions and one of them was "Are there any guns in your house"? Of course her answer was "YES" Doc then asked "Do you know what kind you have"? "Yeah, we have a pistol, 2 shotguns and oh my brother has 3 air soft guns". (I can just picture the kid sitting there all smiles and happy that she knew the info). Mom was sitting there  at the doctor (she was aware where this question was going). Anyway, doc looks at Mom and Daughter both and goes on to tell them "Well, we try to tell our patients to rid their home of ALL guns". My friend said she told the doctor "We are from Mississippi and everybody has guns there, it is the way of life".

Seems I remember this coming up in Women's Issues one time, but has anyone had a recent experience with this kind of questioning?

I have not ever been asked this question when I have taken my kids to the Pediatrician. I wonder if it has something to do with the area that I live in? :dunno:

I think you're remembering the thread where I was asked by my gyno if we owned guns, and then she asked what we were going to do with them when we had kids. I said we'd buy a bigger safe. She contended that we would get rid of them, because when we had kids, everything was going to change.

As for your friend, it might have something to do with data collected by the state health department. I saw a list in my phlebotomist's chair of the diseases that, if they run across someone with them, that they are REQUIRED BY LAW to report to the state health department. The "ridding the home of all guns" is a shortsighted piece of advice meant to increase "safety" in the home. They overlook the safety that you'll experience if you chase away a criminal with your firearm.

I've been asked that question several times over the past few years.

I just tell the Doc/Nurse where it hurts.

That is not relevant to my visit here today.

I would tell the doctor that his business is the illness. My home is my business. I don't ask about what kind of scalpel he has. He doesn't ask what I have at my house.

If he doesn't understand that, and accept that answer, I would find another doctor.

I have never had that issue come up with any of my docs......yet.

My 8 yr old would probably pipe up and tell them "Yeah, my Daddy has guns and my Mommy has one in her truck. Oh, and my Daddy is gonna teach me how to shoot one. He is going to get me the pink crickett".

That question was on the form I filled out for the new PCP I see. I ignored it. And yes there are conditions and diseases required by law to be reported, such as TB, lead poisoning, and several dozen other conditions.

Are you a docter or a gunsmith?

Any doctor that asked my child such a question would be looking for another patient to fill his free time.

My response:

"I make sure that my children don't handle lead ammunition. Can we get on the the check up?"

My doctor had a copy of Shotgun News in the waiting room a while back. :)

If my doctor had asked me if there were guns in the house I would have asked him what the balance in his checking account was. :soap:

A friend's doc did ask about guns and ammo for this reason a while back. They just wanted to know if she ever handled either and if there were things stored where her exposure to the lead was greater. Other than that, it isn't their business.

Fire that feller. Immediately.
Doctors' faux morals and presumed ethics change quickly when there is no money to be had.

Tell your friend, call the yahoo, cancel any and all future appointments and tell 'em why. I'm sure she can find an MD in Dallas that isn't a liberal asshat.

Ask him if he wants to go shooting. If he dont then tell him it is not his concern. Or just go @$%^ himself.

"Of course. What kind of idiot wouldn't do everything possible to protect their life and the safety of their children?"

I have seen a few very good responses to that question in this thread. But I really liked Miss Kitty"s and Havoc"s as well

My doctor goes to the same shooting range I go to. When he asks me about guns in my house he's just curious as to what he should get next.

My wife has been asked the same and either ignored it or told them to pack it. The AMA is a commie organization.

Most of you folks are nicer than I would have been. My repy would have likely been along the line of, "What the h@** does that have to do with things?" Or worse...

One of my favorite people in the world is a filipino pediatrician in his mid 60's.
Last time I talked to him, he had just bought a new AK and wanted to go shooting.

"Well, we try to tell our patients to rid their home of ALL guns".

I have never been asked that by a doctor, but I would hope my reply would be along the lines of:

"Well, we try to tell our doctors to rid their minds of all ignorance." :tongueout:

I would imagine around here the doc's have just as many guns as the rest of us. :wavey:

Our doctor is awesome. He seems to be in agreement with about everything we do and believe!

He's the best doc we've had in YEARS!!!

Guess that's why we followed him when he moved 20 miles away!

i would have asked the doc where he was going with it....who knows maybe he just wanted to go shooting:dunno:

and when he said that he wanted me to get rid of my guns i would have laughed in his face and walked out.

i love the question "how much is in your checking account"
