Thinking about getting an M1 carbine and am interested in feedback on the new Auto Ordnance versions in comparison to the vintage rifles. Any info welcome.

The only thing I know about the M1 is to stay away from Unversial...

Dunhams Sporting Goods calls their M1s Vintage and jacks the price way up more than it should be.

Get the real thing. They are true pieces of history. Both of mine came from CMP.
Winchester, (top), and Inland

Just for future refference what would be a fair price for the Winchester and fair price for the Inland?

You never know when you are going to run into a new gun and its always good to know fair price.

Man, I wish I could help, but I just don't know. I read on another forum that a guy saw a Winnie at his local show priced higher than the Rockola next to it. I think it was $800 but not sure. Inland would be less of course.

Now that CMP is out of both of them, I'm sure the prices will go up.

yo Waterwagonboom,

what grade are those:wavey:

The Winnie is a racker. Muzzle measures 2. The front sight would wobble about one degree either side. It took about two minutes and three sips of beer to fix that. It is in fantastic shape! I couldn't believe it. The Inland is a service grade. Muzzle measures 1. Also in fantastic shape.

Let me add another thought. USGI guns will only go up in value. The civil copies will go down as soon as they go out the door. Just a thought.

Thanks, gents. I'm leaning toward the vintage...my father carried one in Korea for a couple of years; although, he doesn't remember the maker. I've always wanted one, and I just need to break down and do it.

While I like the idea of a less expensive rifle in the AO, it isn't the same.

eddie, whichever you choose you will have a great gun. I believe prices are set by collector value. Inland made the most carbines, so they were the lowest priced. Now, my Inland will stay in the competition with any others all day long! Heck, you can't even read the manufacturer's name without looking under the rear sight.

I bought my Inland just to have a carbine to blast away with. A couple of months later, I broke down and ordered the Winchester. Just because it is a real, made in the USA, honest to God Winchester.

After poking around, it seems that buying a firearm through CMP is more than a simple matter of calling them up with your favorite transfer FFL's address and a Visa. I'm going through with this thing. Standard Products or IBM. Thanks for the help.

ya you got to be a member of a club(go with the Garand Collectors Association) and some other odds and ends. and wait a while. then wait, and wait just a little more. then the next thing you know, there is a gun showing up at your door. no C&R or FFL needed:supergrin:

You may have to jump through a hoop or two but it will be well worth it. My retired mil ID card filled the squares for me.

You will soon have the incurable "CMPitis". Your bank accounts will hate you. CMP's forums are great places for info.

I know what you mean. Let her fondle it when it arrives. After you get it cleaned up, take her to the range and let her blast away. She may fall in love with it. The down side is she may also claim it! I speak from experience.

Stay away from Non GI M1 Carbines. You can get good quality carbines from the CMP, Gunbroker , or where ever. The upside to GI carbine is the availiblity of parts. Oh yeah don't be an import mark snob.

Oh! And if, after your carbine arrives you want to take a step on the wild side, Numrich has very nice M1A1 stocks. Theirs are real walnut, not mystery wood.

Man, that paratrooper setup is beautiful.

Got the paperwork done. Signing up for the Washington State Rifle & Pistol Shooters Assn. tomorrow. Making photo copies tomorrow, and I can get a notary public to sign tomorrow. Pretty painless, really. Still have to wait for membership card. This was easier than I thought.

How plentiful is the .30 cal ammo for the M1 carbine?
Is that round specfic to the M1 or are there other firearms chambered for it?

A good friend who passed away last year had a couple of them and his wife has no use for them. I'm considering buying them. They are GI issue, but I don't think either of them was a Winchester. I'm thinking IBM (?) or Inland.

Well eddie, I guess you'll just have to order two carbines. After all, you don't want to have to swap stocks all the time.

Atlas, ammo isn't hard to find. Not cheap anymore but available. I remember when even commercial .30 carbine didn't cost much more than .22s!

Ain't that the truth.

At first my (future) Wife didn't want to shoot my (first) Carbine, because She thought it kicked.
I emptied a magazine while holding the gun out one handed like a pistol.
From then I spent a lot of our shooting time loading magazines for "Her Carbine".

M2, it is great when a man's wife shoots too. My now ex also claimed a full size 12 ga. She was all of 5' tall and 100 lbs soaking wet and holding a box of 12 ga. ammo. Why did she want it? Hang on to your shorts... to shoot COMPETITION TRAP! Later, she wanted her own Uzi for our trout fishing trips into the high Sierras. Well, until I told her, and proved that the little sucker weighs in at almost 9 lbs.

Quick question about the CMP carbines....do they have import marks, or does it just depend?

p99guy
09-01-2008, 07:04
Noseman...no import marks on CMP guns, they are comming from Uncle Sam not a civvy importer :) (these arent lend lease, they were sold to the other country by uncle sam, and are comming back the same route...so when they come to you from CMP, you will be the first civvy owner of that carbine, its been in govt property(ours or a friendly) all its exsistence...it ships from Anniston Army Arsenal to you, with its"discharge papers" so to speak.
I havent gotten a carbine from them, but did get two M1 Garands that came back from Denmark. you are buying history when you get something from CMP

Atlas, get those carbines! Not only will find them quite a joy to shoot, but they are never going down in value. Don't worry about carbine caliber ammo going away, they are just too dang popular. Just about any cartridge adopted by the U.S. military is garanteed to stick around (hense we still use and build new rifles in 45-70) There are thompson center contender barrels for .30 carbine, Ruger makes a Blackhawk revolver with 7.5 inch barrel in .30carbine..I just purchased one this week that was made in 1979. AMT Automag III pistols can still be found, Taurus "Raging 30" revolver.
So yes there are several things in .30 carbine (and I didnt even mention the Kimball pistol...but that because they are rare and expensive)

I have an AO M1 Carbine. With 300 rounds down, the only problem I have encountered is with aftermarket no USGI mags. I had to file the magazine catch notches down a bit for the mags to fit in the receiver. Great carbine. If you can find one, get it.

Be Safe

Any of the aftermarket mags work better than others? I'm in CA, so I'd have to track down some 10 rounders to make it work....and I don't think USGI made 10 round mags!
