When I changed my 870 wood stock for a Hogue I had a gunsmith do the change because I didn't have the proper wrench. I have researched the wrench because I want one so I can do that work myself and I found out it is pretty expensive. Two questions:
1. Is there another way to remove the 870 forend without the wrench?
2. I found the wrench at Brownell's. Is there another "cheaper" source?
Thanks
Dave

Holy crap, those are expensive!
I got a cheap little tool for free when I bought a Choate forend to replace my old one.

Looks like it would be cheaper to buy the Choate forend, just for the tool, than to buy the other ones.
Really, it's just a metal rectangle with two little tabs that stick out. You could probably make one yourself.

Nice tip. I just tried it, works pretty well.
needle nose pliers worked great for me.

This.
Get it started with a turn or so, and then play with the forend by forcing it back/forth/twisting slightly.
Somewhere that ring should find a spot where it's loose, and you'll be able to finish unscrewing it by hand.

I took a piece of scrap metal and filed it to fit the slots and relieved it so it wouldn't scrape the wood.Worked great clamped in a set of vise-grips.YMMV.tom.
I made my own by using a dremel to cut away all except for 2 tabs on a piece of black pipe (1" i think). It works well and the price was right.

I did almost the same thing, but with a grinder and an old socket. It was a 31/32 and had never been used before and has not been missed since (imagine that).

The pleasure is indeed all mine. I'm pleased to be able to contribute some small helpful hint. I have received a wealth of information here.
