View Full Version : EMP thoughts and price check
I finally was able to fire an EMP. I'm visiting relatives and an indoor local range had an EMP for rent.
Bottom line up front, I have been toying with purchasing an EMP for sometime, I carry a Kimber Ultra CDP II in 45acp.
The EMP has been a rental for over six months and has seen many many rounds down the barrel. It was a typical rental gun, used and abused. When I got the pistol I thought there would be no way this thing will work 100%, but to my surprise it would not fail.
I was truly impressed at how quickly you can get back on target and how accurate the pistol was.
My next issue is where can I find one to purchase, I was told locally they would order one but it would be min. $1200.00, surely there is a better price out there.

Most of the shops around St. Louis, MO. usually sell them for about $1,000.00. The problem right now is finding them. I have had one on order for several months now, and am still waiting. I shot one that belonged to a friend of mine, and ordered one after. I tried to convice him it was an awful gun, and I would be nice and take it off his hands, but it did not work
Springfield just launched the EMP in .40, and that is suppose to be the reason the 9 mm have been so hard to get. Hopefully they will catch up soon.
You may want to look at the new Kimber Ultra CDP II in 9mm, especially if you currently carry a Kimber. I eventually purchased the Kimber and am waiting for my Springfield EMP. I just picked mine up a couple of weeks ago. I have put over 300 rounds of ball ammo with no problems. I was also lazy and did not clean it, just added a little extra oil, and still did not have a problem. It was a pleasure to shoot compared to the 3" .45 acp.
Here is a picture of mine. It is the one on the top right.

The EMP is a great gun, but $1,200.00 seems high.
I purchased mine from here:http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/41343
Put it on a wish list so you'll be notified when they come in. By the way, the EMP is well worth the money.
Great collection, I'm stuck on the 3" 1911s, never had any problems with mine. EMP 9mm first then another Kimber Ultra CDP II in 9mm, :)
Ok, finally bought one after shooting one, I decided I had to have one, you know the deal.
Like a kid in a candy store, I took the pistol home, oiled it up and went to shoot it. Yes I know stupid of me not to clean it before shooting it and I paid the price. It jammed every round. (30 before I stopped).
Cleaned it top to bottom. Then fired 100 rounds. 16 jams. 9 Double feeds, 7 stove pipes with 3 different magazines. The slide never locked back on the last round but did cock the hammer.
So after 130 rounds, not looking good for the home team. At what round count should I call Springfield?
All Walmart winchester white box.
I purchased a used one and they had used a sonic cleaner on it prior to displaying it for sale and it removed every ounce of oil from it. I had the same problem at the range, a jam after every single round.
I squirted oil all over the barrel and inner workings of the slide and it ran like a champ. After that range trip I field stripped it and cleaned the crap out of it and the next range session was a total success!
I have since sold my EMP, but that sure was a fun little gun. A buddy has a Kimber Ultra Carry II in .45 and they are the exactly the same overall size.
I think down the road I will be getting the .40 version since most of my handguns are .40's

Quite a few of us EMP owners have gone through similar situations. Call Springfield as soon as you can and explain situation. I'm sure they will ask you to send it in with a note explaining the failures. I sent mine in on a Tuesday and got it back the next Monday, 6 days. They seem to go out of the way to take care of EMP owners. My EMP has been 100% since I got it back over 1600 rounds ago.
The EMP was originally designed for the .45 GAP, does anyone know if they ever produced any EMPs in .45 GAP.
Not to my knowledge. They recently came out in 40 S&W.
I just picked up an EMP in .40 today. It came with three mags to my surprise. I haven't shot it yet, but maybe this weekend.
Lets up know how the .40 shoots. I had to send my 9mm back to the factory too many hicups. They are also checkering the front slide for me.
I put 50 rounds of Remington UMC through it today without any problems.
I called Springfield and sent it in. They are also checkering the front strap over at the Custom Shop, great customer service, I can't wait to get it back.

I shot 50 more rounds today with Remington UMC hollowpoints and no failures.

I put a new Springfield EMP and STI LS9 next to each other and choose a STI LS9. Both are 3" and built for CCW. STI's workmanship (both features and fit/finish) and the general feel of the LS9 seemed better than the Springfield. It has no problems with Federal or Ranger JHPs.
If someone is still on the fence for a 3" high performance metal framed 9mm or 40SW you might try performing the Springfield vs STI test.
