Wrapped up my Masters at Duke a month ago...but still get e-mails from the university on various things...this morning I had one about a crime that took place right next to campus.

A student was robbed by FIVE individuals, at least one of which was armed with a box cutter. He/she (note doesn't say) threw the money on the ground and attempted to run but was apparently cut while trying to flee. The victim got lucky, though, and managed to escape without major injury.

While they likely would've bailed if the victim had drawn a weapon (illegal to carry on campus) or fired a shot...it has definitely made me think about semi-retiring my current warm-weather carry, a J-Frame .357, and picking up a G26.

5 on 1...what a nightmare.

Draw while retreating. Take out box cutter first then take out each next greatest threat!

My glock 26 has 11rds of 9mm. I feel much more comfortable then when I carry my Kahr Mk9 which only has 7. When I carry the glock I don't worry about a 2nd magazine either.

I'd tell them that I have 10 rounds per crook, and I can always go and come back with more. We'd celebrate 4th of July somewhat early. Where would I start?

I like having a spare in the event of a mag-related failure...

The problem with the 5 on 1 scenario is guy # 6 behind you that you don't see yet.... That many people, they've probably surrounded you before tipping their hand.

If I don't know what's behind me, I'm firing at the knife guy then moving at whatever hole opens up as they flee or drop. Don't want to risk backing up automatically into an ambush. Just a thought. Great on paper, but my first instinct may well be to back away from the knife guy. That might be what they're counting on though. Depends a lot on the distance whether I even try to draw my weapon. If they're already closed in to knife range, you'll be very fortunate to draw and get a few shots off. You've already failed if you end up in that situation.

If 5 guys are still un-detered by your drawing and discharging multiple rounds, they sound pretty intent on getting you. You're screwed in that scenario; hell, even a cop is screwed in that scenario.

Unless you've practiced up on your head shots. Save you some ammo too.

Head shots in a controlled/practice scenario is one thing. In a tense, pumping combat scenario, I'd be amazed if you pulled it off even at close range. Aiming for center of mass and practicing fast (rapid) firing is your best bet to defeat multiple targets.

I believe the gun-kata Beretta's come in to play here with the extendable blades.

From looking closely at three recent defensive shootings in Belize city where gangsters robbed businesses. After the business owner started firing they all retreated leaving whoever got lead on them behind.

Shoot the greatest threat and chances are the rest will run away.

On the most recent Belize city self defence case three theives held up a grocer and a customer. The customer pulled out a machete and wrestled with the main gunman while the grocer pulled out his 9mm pistol and fired three shots which all caught one of the bad guys C.O.M. . After that the other two theives ran away. Thanks to sourveilance the cops were able to arrest both of them and guess what, the main theif was wanted by the cops for a murder he committed six weeks previous to the theft. So even hardened criminals will most likely run after the first shot is fired, but if in doubt keep firing, reload and fire again.

Same thing happen to a friend of mine in Washington D.C. about 4/5 years ago. He was attending law school at Georgetown and while on his way home one night after being at the library he was robbed and beaten severely by some underprivileged youths.

If there is no fear they are crazy and you're screwed.

As I've often told my wife. If a guy breaks in here and you point the Glock/Mossberg at them and they:

1. Smile at you and say, "C'mon" (Like the white guy in the Eddy Murphy joke)
2. Say, "You ain't gonna shoot me"
3. Say nothing and continue towards you-

Pull that trigger and keep pulling it until the wall behind them looks like a Jackson Pollock painting. Anyone who isn't scared of a gun isn't going to take no for an answer.

One time I was arriving at my apartment at night. As I was parking, I saw two individuals that were walking slowly enough to case the complex, as I knew they didn't live there, and I know those tricks. I made sure to be even slower so as to let them pass as I exited my vehicle to make my way home. Well, they made sure to be right in my way, to stop me and ask for my cel. I said there was a gas station right across the street. They allegedly had no change. I asked what it was exactly, really, what they wanted. They said they were lost. Funny thing, there's only one way in and one way out of the complex, why don't you step out to the avenue and you won't be lost anymore? Now it was that they needed to tell someone where to pick them up. Problem with that was, how the heck are you going to tell someone to pick you up when you're lost yourself? Where are you going to tell them to go? You don't know where you are, and you don't want to go to a well transited avenue to heal all your ailments, so, it was obvious they weren't going anywhere. I said, fine. You want my friggin phone? Here you go. Handed it to them, took three steps back, and assumed the position. As they looked at each other pretty stupid, I said, go ahead, dial. The guy dialed a couple of fake numbers, he didn't even dial a set of seven or ten digits once. The thought crossed my mind, why don't I show them how it's done? They both stood there facing me, the one looking at the phone like he didn't know what it was, and the other with his hands at the ready position in front of him, ready to lift his shirt and try to take me by surprise. I had my hand on the grip of my 23, which so convenientely had two extra mags full of slap yo momma hollow points. Well, I didn't show them how it's done, because then I'd be just like one of them. I asked if they were done, they looked at each other, then said, "Yeah". Ok, good. Took the steps to retrieve my communicative device, put it back in my pocket, and took the steps back to assume the position again. A couple of awkward moments, I didn't even blink, and they began to walk slowly away, and I didn't move until they were walking like let's get the heck out of here. A week later they did the same thing to someone else, who happened to just turn his face the other way, just to hear the chambering of a gun at his temple. Needless to say that he was left in boxers out on a cold night.
