View Full Version : Leaving a Gun in Hot Car During the Summer!

This may have been addressed somewhere, if it has I've yet to find it. I see several gun safes for cars being talked about though I rarely ever leave a gun in the car, so I'm curious about the following question, is it safe to leave a loaded Glock locked in your hot car during the summer. I know in a fire a gun can cook off rounds, but is just the heat inside a car during the hot summer enough to do that also?
I hate to ever take my gun off and leave it in the car, but some places just refuse to allow them. I normally won't give my business to such places but I had no choice the other day, I take my girlfriend for xrays, she hurt her arm while we were out. The xray clinic had a "no firearms beyond this point" sign, I even asked a supervisor there explaining I was licensed and wasn't truly comfortable leaving my weapon in my car, but that fell on deaf ears. So, now that summertime is here please let me know if the Summer heat is too much for guns to be left in your car or not.
Thanks,
i think it would be fine...but i see your concern.

Been doin' it for years here in NC....never a problem.
If summer heat would have set off a bullet it would have happened when I was in Baghdad. It was really approaching 130 during our patrols and you needed gloves just to touch anything metal as you would instantly be burned.
Never had a problem :)
Let's apply a little common sense to the question.
How many media reports have you read or seen of ammo cooking off in hot car interiors?
...................none? There's your answer.
After a quick Google search, I found an article in which somebody tested some different rounds in an oven. The temperatures varied, but had to be close to 300 degrees or over to cause cook off. If the inside of your car gets that hot, it's probably because your gas tank has exploded and it's engulfed in flames.

For what it's worth, if your car has a trunk (not hatchback or SUV) it should stay much cooler than the car's interior. The sun rays passing thru the windshield cause a greenhouse effect, raising temps a lot.

Someone here once said...have your sunglasses or CD's ever melted???
I always have a gun in the car. Usually my Beretta 92 w/ a few extra mags. Never had a problem, never will. 100+F in the summer and gets below -20F in the winter. Always goes bang. Think of all the guns/ammo in the Sand Box right now. That should be good enough.

I once left an ammo can filled with en bloc clips of LC .30-06 in the car on a hot summer day. 47 killed, 123 injured. It was terrible. I had to buy two cans of bondo and three cans of touch up paint to fix the car.

Gun or no gun in a vehicle in Arizona during the summer I crack my windows about 1/2 inch. It let's the heat escape to make it bearable when you get back inside. I also use one of those things (I can't think of what you call it right now:rofl:) that sits on your dashboard and covers your front windshield to reflect the suns rays.

Okay, so maybe it was a dumb question, but since I've never in my 56 years on earth been one to leave a gun in the car for long periods, and really over all those years gun safes for cars weren't always around, I truly didn't know. Thanks for answering the question for me!

Not a dumb question at all. If you don't know, you don't know! I have to leave a Glock in my car daily. Never been a problem, even here in the FL swelter.

A Sun Shade?
Seriously I've left guns in plenty of hot cars. It's not an issue.

Even when I lived in Phoenix, I always had a gun in the truck.
If that won't set it off, then it's just not going to happen.
Go forth with confidence.

I'd say my Glock would melt before a round would cook off. So pretty much only during a car fire ...
A gun in a hot car during the summer. Hmm. That might explain all the bullet holes in cars in the “urban” areas around here.
I just came in from work with my G19 and an extra mag in my briefcase.
It was 113 in the cab of my truck when I started home.
No bullet holes or warped frames here. I have been carrying for 8 years
or so with no problems.
You won't cook off a round with temperatures from being in a car or in the shade of a car safe.
It should be fine. Unless you have an OD green Glock. Those frames WILL melt if left in a hot car all day.
