View Full Version : Which 9mm +P+ is better? 9BPLE OR RA9TA..?
Just asking for personal opinions on these two rounds. Federal 9BPLE or Winchester RA9TA. What would you carry for CCW if you had the choice of these two?

I haven't seen any ballistics info for either round. I can tell you that the boys next door in the Dekalb County(GA) PD have used the Federal 9BPLE for years and are pretty happy with it.(And believe me, it sees plenty of action)
I've heard good things about the Corbon load. But I would probably go with the winchester load, I just prefer a 124/127 over a 115 grain.

For a bit on the Federal. The RA9TA is a good load also. You can't go wrong with either one.
Winchester RA9TA's are on order now for the G19.. I liked the reviews on em so I thought I would give em a whirl.

You made a great choice, you will not find a greater self defense round then the Ranger SXT.

I wouldn't want to get hit with either. Don't think there's a bad choice here. Just make sure you hit what you aim for. Some weapons will prefer one or the other. Give them a try and make sure they are accurate and shoot to point of aim in your gun, and then practice, practice, practice.

Awhile back had a boatload of stuff hanging around so setup a very threatening D1 target at 15yds in a very unscientific rapid fire test with my G26. SXT's, Rem GS, Speer GD, 9BPLE (regular carry) and Fed +P EFMJ. The Rangers and the GS were at top accuracy wise, 9BPLE just below, then the Speers, with the very poor EFMJ load at the bottom. My gun, YMMV. All quality loads, all were acceptable except the EFMJ, which was throwing bullets way right. As gentleman above correctly said, find what you can get regularly that's a quality load in sufficient quantity to practice with that throws the round closest to POA for you while shooting your gun.

I know there are die hard velocity/light 9mm bullet guys, but I'd go heavier, you'll get better penetration. IMO, never short yourself on penetration, expansion should be a secondary concern.

I'm getting ready to make the switch from 127 Gr. +P+ SXT to the 147 Gr. SXT.
Your correct, expansion come's in second place after penetration as a added bonus.
