12ga Sabots for hunting

I am looking for 12ga sabots for my 870 w/ 24" rifled barrel for deer hunting.

Are the expensive sabots worth it? I just got this toy last year and haven't had much chance to play with it yet. I sighted it in to an estimated 75 yards with cheap Brenneke KO slugs which drifted & sank at greater distances. This could have been user error though, as my shoulder was getting worn out once I was finally on target at the closer distances.

I am looking at the Remington, Winchester, Hornady & Brenneke 300-385 grain sabots for starters, but am open to suggestions.

Any advice, success stores or brands to steer clear of?

Seriously, slug guns are very picky and you have to cater to their taste. What is the max range you expect to shoot? If it is less than 100yrds, which is the majority of hunting shots, then the brenkes will be fine. Winchester also makes some pretty reasonable slugs you can try. The premium slugs are rediculously exspensive and should only be used if it is the only thing your gun likes or you have found the niche that the premium round fulfills.

Be careful with the Rem. C.S. They are great in most barrels/guns but check your barrel manufacturer and specs. Some (like Hastings) warn not to use Remington Copper Solids.

Buy 4-5 boxes of different kinds and try them out. My first rifled barrel loved Lightfield Sabots. I recently went to a single shot 20ga. which eats 3" Federal Barnes very well. Different guns, different barrels, different ammo preferences.

Many days at the range testing slugs so I know the feeling of a sore shoulder. Watch that flinch!!!!!!!!!! It still happens to me on occasion after 20 years of slug hunting.

Lightfield slugs which are not typical SABOT are what I use. They are quite expensive.

As far as the 24" bbl goes, I have a 20" now had a 24" cantilever hasting barrel, and found out the extra 4" was an bear for the wood, with getting tangle up with the vegetation.
