Saw the following ad on the Brenneke homepage and wondered what other people thought about this. I'll probably stick with the 00 buck, but this got my attention & I'm curious.

They are supposed to be lower penetration/controlled expansion for CQB type scenarios.

IMO ~ any lead projectile that's 3/4" in diameter travelling at high-velocity is gonna leave a mark

Brenneke's are my favorite slug bar none, but IMO they are a bit much for home defense, my reasoning is the penetration of the typical Brenneke. I've never used the load that you posted about but I'd guess it would still penetrate a bit much through sheetrock etc. If you live out in the country, they'd be very effective, if you live in town though they might not be what you need. OO is very effective while offering less penetration, currently I have my 590 loaded with Quik Shok slugs that I picked up a few years ago on clearance. They break into 3 pieces upon contact with flesh, kind of like buck shot. My backup loads are Brenneke blk magic's, 1 3/8 oz slugs at 1500 fps IIRC. They are stout!

During my street days, I dropped the slugs and loaded only OO Buck which would penetrate the front seat fired through the trunk. At hallway distances, 2" to 4" hole if someone was stupid enough to do something stupid. :faint:

I did the opposite I don't have any 00 buck on or in my shotgun. I have it loaded with Breneke slugs. But its used for Bear and moose calls. Breneke slugs also do a lot better on vehicles than 00 buck or .223 rounds.

ammunitiontogo.com sells them I believe. Haven't used them myself. I keep low recoil 00 Buck and #4 Buck around the house. Ammunition to go has several of the Brenneke rounds, some are a little pricey compared to the others.

I'm sorry at 10' anything you have in that shotgun is going to blow one big nasty hole in the BG!! That's 3.5 yds!! Slugs inside a home equal lots of holes in walls! They also require you to AIM like a pistol/rifle- The again you'd have to AIM with buck at that distance as well!!

To me, using slugs sort of negates the point of using a SG, which is to have a heavy payload land on targer w/ slightly less precision than a solid. Might as well go to a rifle round. I'ld stay w/ the buckshot.

Agree with Gunnut 45/454 and fredj338...

From 15 feet, the buckshot load/weapon I use will spread to about 3 inches, and there will be 12 .33 inch holes in that 3 inch area... I would prefer that to a single .73 inch hole...

I find that preferrable to a slug that will penetrate a 4 x 4 inch stud, also!!!

At typical distances inside your home the shot pattern is not that large. You will have to aim like a rifle pistol. All combat shotguns must be fired this way we are not wing shooting. Only when you get to about 15 yards to you start to have a pattern that is around 6 to 10 inches (depending on your gun).

Correct, but still, a 75cal solid or 3"dia. charge, the 3" dia. charge gives you 3x the margin of aiming error. One reason the 12ga is my HD choice for a long gun.

To each his own a 12 gauge with buck shot is far from my last choice. I prefer a good .223 carbine for home defense. But a 12 gauge shotgun would do just fine as well.

Are they saying that the 12 ga. slug will penetrate a kevlar vest or just the impact will stop a bg. If what they're saying is true, why didn't LAPD just get some slugs for their sg's instead of going to the gunstore for 556's during the bank robbery/shootout?

Slugs will not penetrate vests and contrary to what some think the blunt trauma of the slug impacting the vest is not a reliable fight stopper. There are documented cases of people being shot with slugs while they had vests on and they kept fighting.

I like 3-1/2 00 It'll stop anything... 2-3/4 Slug would be nice but it might be a little too much with neighbors and kids around... If someone is hiding behind the counter or behind the wall I rather take the 3-1/2 fir better chance of a hit than one shot hit or miss with neighbors.

How many can you load in the tube? Two or three?
How is an 18-pellet 00 buckshot load going to be any less of a liability than a single slug projectile? The chances of 18 pellets missing the target is greater than one well-placed slug. You DO have to aim with a shotgun, contrary to what many people think. I bet you haven't even patterned your sg with that cannon load either.

I bet my low recoil 00 and 000 buckshot kills the bad guys just as dead, just as quickly; and my follow-up shots will be quicker
