View Full Version : mixin it up?
hey guys,
quickie, just wondered if anyone alternates between 2 different brands or types of ammo, when they load their mags, for their carry guns?
ie hollow point, fulljacket, hollow point, fulljacket. etc....
whoot! I've finally got a g19 on hold!!:supergrin::supergrin::supergrin:
Speer Gold Dots all the way down my magazine...
I can't see any advantage to doing so...what would be the objective of such a loading of the mag???

I sometimes have two or more brands mixed together in a magazine, but the same basic bullet design.
It just happens that way; open a new box of a different brand to top off a new magazine, things like that.............
As long as it works reliably, that's all I'm really concerned woth.

One argument I heard made by Ayoob against that was the that if you got into a shootout, you are likely going to have a real cluster******* of a time trying to prove what was shot at what distances and you can get mowed down in the courtroom when the ballistic expert starts testifying. I didn't explain that nearly as well as Ayoob did, but... I *think* that makes sense the way I explained it. Try to load your gun with the same stuff when you're carrying. That way, powder marks are similar, etc...
Also, I don't think that modern hollow points have any more problems defeating clothing, car doors, etc. than ball ammo. I think that, at worst, the only thing that might happen is that it won't expand after passing through material "x," but that makes it no less effective than ball.

My carry is Fed hydrashock .40. I do use different bullets in my .375 mag. the purpose being the jacketed .38 as the first shot first first attempt to stop. If BG/Bear (I know .357 mag is light for bear but I'd only have to deal with black bear) does not get the picture after that, they get the mag hollow point :whistling: Also the mag travel quite well through walls and even though there are no kids in my house yet, I'd like to avoid shots that might make it threw multiple walls, but only to a point!
I've always thought this was a possibility for a feeding malfunction in an auto-loader. I try not to give ol' Murphy a way into my life if I can help it.

Hollowpoints all the way. Can't see why you would want to alternate HP and FMJ:dunno:
No, I don't.
And whenever this question comes up the consensus is to pick a quality, reliable JHP and stick to it. Unless you are unlucky enough to live in New Jersey and holy enough to actually be able to legally carry in New Jersey, in which case you must use FMJ according to the law.

I did when I first got into having a CCW, but after making several trips to the range in the past few months with ALL kinds of ammo, I've decided it's rather moot to do so.
I've decided to carry and train with Georgia Arms hollowpoints exclusively. They are high quality, cheap enough to buy in bulk (in fact this is the only source of ammo that really allows you to "use what you practice with" because of its affordability), accurate, consistent, and dependable. Not one misfire, not one variance in recoil (federal "classic" training ammo must have had several different casings with varying loads). I definitely would trust my life to anything from Georgia Arms (shameless plug, http://www.georgia-arms.com).

No. :whistling: I'd better leave it at that!
hey, good answers guys. (as usual!)
it was just a funny question that popped into my head.
it was just something I could see as an OCD, or indecisive kinda of thing...
magiaaron,

My 9's, 40, and 45's get hollowpoints all the way. My P3AT gets hollowpoints alternated with FMJ's all the way through. I figure the 380 has marginal penetration at best and I might need to go deep, especially in winter.
Don't know how sound that idea is, but that's the way I figure it. I'm more worried about a miss with any caliber, than over-penetration.

+1...I believe in carrying what our local LEO's carry in their duty guns
In my 9mm I carry, It is loaded with jacketed hollow points. Spare mag(s) are full with the same FMJ I use at the range. This is for two reasons.
First, I figure that if I ever get into a second mag, I need more penetration.
Second, If I'm ever out in the middle of nowhere either alone or with friends, I can switch mags and the chambered round to FMJ to shoot a few rounds off, and not waste the hollow points.
When I carry my .38 revolver, it is loaded with lead hollow points. My two speed strip reloads are full of the same FMJ target ammunition I shoot at the range. Again, if I ever need better barrier penetration, lead hollow points aren't the greatest so I carry FMJ as my reloads. Also allows me to switch to FMJ to 'plink' with out in the woods if I ever want to :)
I too load only hollow points into my magazines. However I also like to have decent barrier penetration so I use bonded HP's (Federal tactical bonded). Take a look at some of the bonded rounds out there. You usually sacrifice a little expansion but some is better than none vice a FMJ.

They have some decent prices. Sounds like you like the handgun ammo. Any experience with the rifle ammo. Interested in .223 and .308.

LOL :whistling:
The only rifle I have is a 44 mag Marlin, so yea, I've only been exposed to handgun ammo frm this site (or otherwise). I will say though, I've ordered 40 S&W, 10mm, 45ACP, and 44 mag from Georgia Arms and it's ALL great.
Best thing I can recommend with the rifle ammo is get a bag of 50 and see if you like it. I'd be willing to bet you will. :)
Notice I said bag, not box. They load the ammo in their shop and heat-seal the rounds in 50-round bags (at least for pistol ammo). It's a little awkward when you see for the first time but it but works. ;)

Next month I'm going to get a few bags of Georgia Arms Gold Dots to replace the Silvertips I currently carry just for that reason at the next gun show.
