View Full Version : 135gr. .40S&W perform like a siggy???
Without having to swap barrels can't I pretty much get ".357 sigish" performance from a 135gr. .40cal round b/c its pretty much screaming when it comes out of a G23 barrel correct? Give me some enlightenment fellas....

You can get similar speeds. But the bullets behave a lot differently. The 135 grain bullet is light for the 40 and it is a shallow penetrator. Most of the 125 grain 357 sig rounds penetrate deeper and do not fragment.

Ok.. cool... I am currently carrying Hornady 155 gr. TAPs So far they seem pretty good.. They feed reliably in my G23 (I guess thats b/c the face of the jhp is not as wide as many other bullets I've seen) but it does seem snappy.. Its taking me some time to get adjusted to it. I am going to probably have to get some practice time in with 165gr ammo b/c the 180gr blazer and WWB is generally 180gr. I find...

i had the same idea, about using 135 grain in .40. what i found was increased muzzle flash, recoil, and NOISE! i now use 180 grain in my .40 for reduced noise, reduced recoil, and with federal HST, plenty of expansion and penetration
as for penetration, this is exactly what pat is referring to (sectional densities):
(SD => Bullet weight and caliber)
0.167 => 147gr 9x19mm
0.162 => 230gr .45acp
0.161 => 180gr .40S&W
0.153 => 135gr 9x19mm
0.148 => 165gr .40S&W
0.144 => 127gr 9x19mm
0.141 => 125gr .357sig
0.140 => 124gr 9x19mm
0.140 => 200gr .45acp
0.138 => 155gr .40S&W
0.130 => 185gr .45acp
0.130 => 115gr 9x19mm
0.121 => 135gr .40S&W

If I were carrying a 40 I would load it with 165 or 180 grain Federal HST rounds.
