View Full Version : Sellier & Bellot Ammo
I bought a box of Sellier & Bellot .45 GAP for $20 today. I was wondering if anybody has any experience with this ammo and way they put red paint on the primer?
The red paint is primer sealer. Winchester does this with their Ranger T line but it is clear/waxy instead of red. I think the red looks neat; that is the extent of my experience with the ammo though.

I've shot S&B in all three of my guns without any problem.

It has been many years since I used S&B, but I remember it was reliable, accurate and fairly clean.

I read that S&B is "iffy" because of the hard primers but I've shot several boxes in two different calibers and I didn't have a single problem. The red coating doesn't mean anything; I've got the same color on some Remington Golden Saber rounds.
I guess I'll just have to shoot it. I reckon that's reason they make many different brands of ammo. I'll just have to shoot them all to find what I like.
I've fired about 300 rounds of S&B collectively through my Tomcats with no problems.
I shoot LOTS of S&B 45 ACP and have zero problems with it. Its clean and accurate.
As someone said, the red on the primer is a sealer to keep water and oil out longterm. The only thing I can say for their ammo is it's usually loaded hot but not in a bad way or anything.
I have easily shot over 10,000 rounds of S&B w/ only one "issue". One misaligned primer on a .223/5.56 round. Noticed it while loading so I tossed it aside. While none of them were 45 G.A.P., I covered most of the popular cals: 9mm,.40SW,.45 ACP,38 spc, .223/5.56, and 12 ga. Oh yea and a few boxes of 30 carb and .380 ACP too.
As prev discussed that is red primer sealant. Only problem is you get a red thumb after you load up a few boxes.

I've shot S&B in 9mm, .38/.357, .45, .40, 7.62X39, 5.56, 7.92X57 (8mm Mauser), .303 British, 12ga, and a few other calibers. In some cases like the 7.62X39, thousands of rounds. Never had any problems, and i used S&B in the 8mm and .303 for the longest shots I've ever taken (20-30 rounds at 950 meters or so).
