I shoot a lot, mostly with my own reloads. I've got them down to 7.5 cents a round. I make mostly mid power ammo.
My carry G23 is loaded with 180gr GD. I shot 2 mags to function test them and have never shot them again.
So how often do you shoot the ammo you carry?

The general concensus around here is to test your gun with 50-200 rounds of your intended carry ammo with zero malfunctions.
Then, shoot up your carry ammo every season/six months/year.
It's also a good idea to check your carry ammo every now and then for signs of damage. If you constantly chamber a round, make sure there is no bullet setback. And check all the ammo in the mag to make sure the brass wasn't dented last time you slammed your gun into a doorway, etc.
Aside from potential problems with old carry ammo like dents and bullet setback, it's never a bad idea to get in more practice with your carry ammo. The more familiar you are with what you carry, the better.
I "usually" shoot all magazines once a year, but I have carried it for up to two years. I inspect it everytime I unload my carry piece to practice or clean it, checking for dents, visible setback, or deformed tips. I just have atleast an extra box or two of that specific carry ammo to replace what I need to.
50 rounds or so, 4x a year........in addition to that 100 WWB monthly
I shot 50 rounds of my carry ammo through my Glock and have kept it exclusively for self-defense now that I know my gun will shoot it.
Self-defense ammo is just too expensive IMHO to shoot very much of. $27 a box of 25 compared to $12.00 or so for 50 practice rounds!

I've made the decision to practice and carry with Georgia Arms defense loads. They are affordable in bulk with several calibers avaialble in +P, good ballistics, too (especially in the 10mm catagory).
If you're willing to spend an extra 10-20% above bottom-line practice rounds for bulk CARRY ammo with which you can also practice, there is no substitute. Or at least, if there is, I'd love to know about it! :D
So, to answer your question, all the time!

Very seldom.
I have complete confidence that the gun will function properly or I wouldn't be carrying it.
Once in a while I shoot the ammo that's been in the gun for some time.
When I shoot this ammo I think, Well let's see if everything would have worked had I needed it.

I have three pistols that I rotate for concealed carry purposes, but my favorite is my Kimber Ultra Carry in .45 ACP.
I shoot up all of my carry ammo every other month and replace it with new ammo of the same brand and type. Before reloading I always check each round of ammo for any obvious sign of a problems, check the seating of the primer for any oddities, carefully look at the bullet to make sure it is seated properly, check the rim for any irregularities, and just give these bad boys a good going over before considering them as a life saver.
So I spend about $100 every other month for fresh ammo while re-acquainting myself with the feel and characteristics of the carry ammo when I shoot up the older lot.

Every trip to the range. I shoot what I've been carrying, shoot up my practice ammo, and then reload fresh carry.

You're getting ripped off! A lot of places sell the 20 or 25 round boxes for the same price as the 50 round boxes. If you can't find a place that sells the 50 round boxes locally, go online. Even with a bit of shipping, you should end up saving some money.

Evendently, not enough. Mine is starting to turn green:rofl:
Every time I go to the range I shoot a mag of my SD ammo for whatever I take. Out with the old in with the new. BUT - I don't load the $2 a pop stuff. I figure that I stay fresh with my SD loads then they'll go where they should and all will be right with the world (or not).

As others have stated, I fire all the rounds in my carry magazines at each range session and fill em up with fresh (about 30 rounds)

For my G19, I always have 3 mags loaded with "carry ammo". Each range trip I unload 2 of them to use practice rounds in. Throughout the range trip I will fire 1-4 shots at a time with the "carry ammo" mag. When I leave, I load back up with the same "carry ammo"
Short answer, 16 rounds per range session, which can be as often as once a week, or as far apart as 2 months, depending on cash flow and what else I have going on.

In my duty gun, I shoot my carry ammo up when we go to qualify.
