Finally getting a bit of a vacation. Going to Panama City Beach. I'd like to be able to bring a firearm along. My CCP is honored by all states I'll be traveling thru. I will be traveling thru LA, MS, AL, and FL. I don't plan on concealed carry while there but would like to have it in the car and hotel room. I'm thinking of getting a center of mass safe for the car and hotel room. I guess i could strap the safe to something in the room. My main concern would be housekeeping. Couple of questions:
1. How do I go about finding out the firearm transportation laws of each state i'll be traveling thru. In LA your vehicle is an extension of your home so throwing it under the seat is ok. Not sure about the other states.
2. What is the best method of keeping the gun accessible and safe while at the hotel room?
We are staying on the west end of the beach which I hear is more quiet than the rest of the beach. We don't plan on this trip being spring break '08 or anything. Thanks in advance for the help!

The link above provides good information about the carry/transportation laws of each state. Enjoy your trip.
The resource listed above is the best for figuring out whats legal and whats not legal. Best place to store your firearm while staying in a hotel is ON YOUR PERSON. In fact, that is the safest place to have it... period. (IMHO).
When it can't be, I'd use a room safe or lock it in my glovebox during swimming times, etc. when you cannot carry it.

This map is for those not possessing a CHP.

But since you have a CHP you can possess a handgun while in your car in AL.

Some hotels have a safe in the room or you could use the Center Of Mass lock-box and tie it around something fixed in the hotel room.
:)

1. In MS. car is an extension of your home also, with or without permit. Carry any way you want to.
2. Most nice hotels now have in room safes, if not use COM. Of course the best answer is - on you.

You have a CCW recognized in AL and FL, yes?
What, specifically do you want to know?
Florida has LOTS of travel laws! :)

Yes my permit is recognized in FL. I have called MS and AL state offices and will have no problems in those states. I will call FL tomorrow. My guess is no problem there either.

Yep, won't be a problem. Your license is fully recognized in FL. With a license, there are no weird idiosyncrasies while traveling. Keep it on you, in the console, whatever is comfortable and convenient for you. No duty to inform LEO that you are carrying, unless specifically asked. Keep your CCW and DL on you when you carry.
I don't have the link on this machine, but I'll post the list of prohibited places in a bit.
Enjoy your trip.

Asked what? Cite Please....
If you are referring to 790.06(1)
. . .
The licensee must carry the license, together with valid identification, at all times in which the licensee is in actual possession of a concealed weapon or firearm and must display both the license and proper identification upon demand by a law enforcement officer.
. . .
This means that if a LEO asks you for your license you need to show it, or pay a non-criminal fine of $25. This does not refer to a situation where a LEO asks if you have any guns in the car...
No requirement to ever tell LEO that you are carrying.

:embarassed: You're right, of course, Brian. That was supposed to be my meaning. My statement was worded very poorly. Lack of the proper caffeine level is my only excuse. :embarassed:

Sorry did not mean to pounce like that :freak:.....but the past two weeks I've had to be extra, extra anal (even more so that usual) - been working on a $50+ Million RFP and right now it's all about being very, very anal. Dot every "i" and cross every "t".
The wifey even told me to STFU a few times this week! :zipmouth:

No harm, no foul, brother. He got the correct information, that's what is important...
BTW, I HATE writing RFPs!
