View Full Version : What's the worst ammo you've ever used ?
I know a lot of people talk about poor quality weapons, accessories, etc. But have you used any ammo that was just terrible quality ? Multiple FTE, FTF, etc ? I always thought that Wolf was poor quality, but other than being dirty most people seem to like it pretty well.
The worst I've ever used is Remington UMC in the yellow box. That stuff won't even cycle in a few of my guns.

Never had a malfunction with it in my Beretta 92FS
American Ammunition.

Granted all 250 rounds of it fired without a hitch but the UMC stuff was very dirty. After just 15 shots outside of pistol was gray.

Amerc. never shot the stuff myself, but a less knowledgeable friend bought a couple boxes for his Beretta. Strolls over one day with one of the boxes in tow. Asks me if this is normal, and hands me 4 live primers. They fell out of the pockets from normal handling in the package. Customer service...yea right. So we torched them in a burn barrel.

When we used to shoot at Fort Meade, they made you use "green" environmentally safe, ammunition. I never got so good at clearing my weapons from failure to fires as I did back when I was shooting the stuff. To get through a whole magazine without a malfunction was almost impossible, and it shot really high from all of our guns.
I don't remember the brand name, but the only good thing about it was your guns looked as clean after you shot them as they did before.

I have bad luck with fiocci
Winchester WinClean .45 ACP FMJ
I have two Smith and Wesson 1911's. One is a Performance Center and another is PD, neither like that ammo. Lots of fail to feeds and problems. They'll shoot anything else but that stuff...even regular White Box.
Beats the heck out of me what it is about the round but something is different. Everything else, Magtech, American Eagle, Blazer, Fiochi, you name it, it's all flawless.
I have never encountered an ammo that didn't run smoothly through any of my Glocks. Every other brand I own has special needs.
Anything with Winchester, Federal or Speer is 100% through anything in my observation.

American Ammunition will "run through" a Glock, but you're liable to eventually have a weak case, or worse, a double charge which will then KB your Glock to pieces, as a double charged round of .45ACP AA did to my G30 years ago.
Aside from that, CCI Blazer will eventually not extract well from a Glock 19 if the Glock gets dirty enough. This may only apply to LCI versions. Enough people have noticed the same thing -- after a couple hundred rounds w/o cleaning you get the occasional "horizontal stovepipe" from CCI Blazer -- that I can conclude it's for real.

Why would anyone use American Ammunition? (for those of you who don't know, that's the brand. We're not talking about all American ammo in general :patriot:) They use cheap components and powder that's dirty. A real quality American brand like CCI Blazer is about the same price and is more clean and accurate. No KB's from CCI that I've ever seen.
Why would anyone use American Ammunition?
1. Newbies that don't know better (for example, me, at that time).
2. Some clueless ammo buyers for PD training departments maybe?

My local range rents Glocks out to people and they sell CCI Blazer. They claim to never clean their Glocks until they have to, which basically never happens. They all have the extractor with the loaded chamber indicator. What made me laugh at this post is when you said "a couple hundred rounds". HA! That's not dirty buddy.

That would be it.
I've never had a problem with A-merc. I bought 500 rounds of .32 acp a number of years back, and have maybe 100 rounds left. No issues.
I have a Beretta Bobcat that's very, very finicky with .22 ammo. There are certain brands it just refuses to function with. But I attribute that to the gun and not the ammo. Other than that, I really can't think of any ammo I've used and had problems with.

umc green box for me. not very good.
I agree with MP5a3. I have had bad luck with Remington green box.
Just about every brand you can think of has been shot out of my Glocks with no problems. But my Romanian AK has the most problems with FTF using Wolf Black Box. Works fine with Wolf Military Classic though.
It's a tie between .223 55gr UMC green box and .40 165gr gold dot.

I've read enough incidents exactly the same -- G19 with LCI + CCI Blazer = intermittent "horizontal stovepipe" -- reported from several different people across multiple gun boards that it can't be just my gun doing this.

back in 93 me & a buddy bought a thousand rounds of Egyptian berdan primed corrosive 9mm ammo that apparently was left over from Ali's Massacre of the Mamelukes
I think we paid $25 for a thousand rounds, and it came in 36 round boxes that looked like they had been chewed on by mice (and then the warehouse they were sitting in was flooded by municipal sewage) as bad as the smell of them sitting in the box was, it wasnt nearly as bad as how they smelled after you shot them.
at any rate - my friend's Ruger 94 would fire every one of them but my G19 just couldnt hit the primer hard enough to get more than 50% of them to fire
