View Full Version : Need advice: Practice grade 45 ACP ammo
I have plans in motion to purchase a G30. This will be my first privately owned firearm as well as my first carry weapon. There are plenty of excellent choices for high-quality defensive ammo but I won't need more than a box or two of that. What I really need is a recommendation on reliable, won't-f-up-my-gun practice ammo.
I've tried a variety of grains and +p combinations; the differences are noticeable but not overwhelming for me, so I don't feel it's necessary for my practice ammo to be identical to my defense ammo.
I live in NW Washington State (across the water from Seattle) and, at $4.50/gallon, my driving range is going to be limited (although I'm reasonably close to a WalMart and a Sportsmans Warehouse). I would greatly appreciate any recommendations on brand/make of ammo, as well as local and online suppliers.
Thanks in advance!
You can order alot online cheap if you go bulk. I like www.ammunitiontogo.com They're not the cheapest but their service and products have never failed me and that's worth alot.
If you're close to Wal-Mart go and get some of the Winchester White Box Value Packs. It's 100 rounds of ACP for $28.95. Good stuff, clean and won't mess anything up on your pistol. I just bought 8 boxes last time I was there.
Thanks for the tip, I'll be checking them out.
Someone recommedned Sellier & Bellot at cheaperthandirt (http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/AMM507-3588-208.html). Appears to be a pretty clean, cheap round.

Winchester White Box purchased from Wal-Mart is typically the least expensive "good" ammunition. It's dirty, but it works every time, and hasn't caused anyone's gun to blow up. You can usually get Wolf and S&B steel cased range ammo for a bit cheaper. I wouldn't run it unless it was significantly less expensive, though.
If you reload, WWB is really the way to go. Good quality brass at a very low price.

WWB from WallyWorld or aluminum-cased Blazer, if you can get the latter cheaper AND you don't reload.

I've checked all over online and after shipping costs are added, Wal-Mart is still the cheapest. The price per round is cheaper when you buy in a box of 50 at wal-mart then 1,000 at some places online. Blazer Brass is slightly cheaper than Winchester White Box. I still get the WWB is the Blazer is sold out. I have a G30 and have never had one malfunction with thousands of rounds including Blazer Brass, WWB and Federal HST.

I would give the 230 grain Blazer a try. I have always had good results with the Blazer in my Glocks.

This guy is in your state, so shipping will be cheap.

I was actually shooting 230 grain blazer today. I wasn't precision target shooting, but it worked fine and I got plenty of trigger time to practice my trigger manipulation. It was about $15 per box of 50. So, not bad, but not as cheap as I remember back in the good days of cheap ammo.

Thanks for the input, you guys are great! Especially that link, Little Joe; I'll expect I'll be ordering from them. $300/1000rds of 230gr FMJ, that's not too bad.

+1 on the WWB and the Blazer, both the aluminum and the Brass (if they have it). Also, Natchez.com sells the aluminum Blazer stuff for fairly cheap if your Wal-Mart doesn't stock it (like mine :()

I shoot Blazer brass in my 21SF, 14.88/50 at my local walmart. If you ask the sporting goods manager they will order you in as much as you'd like.
I just went to Wal-Mart.
They usually have 100 boxes of WWB for .45 AUTO for $28.95.
Today the guy said, We don't have 100 round boxes of .45, only 50 round boxes. I asked for a price check on the 50 round boxes since the sticker said $27.43. (he scanned it and the computer said the same thing.)
I told him there must be something wrong because their 100 round boxes are usually $28. He looked at me like I was crazy.
Similar experiences with anyone else??
