I've recently gotten interested in distance swimming and I have a question...

For surface swimming, the modified side stroke that SEALs are taught in BUD/S, is that the most efficient way to move through water? That is, does it get the most distance with the least amount of energy expenditure? (I know front crawl is the fastest, but uses lots of energy).

Or do SEALs use this stroke because they will typically be carrying XX amount of gear on their persons and this stroke is the most accomodating?

Newly minted SEALs will probably be able to better answer this, as I do not know how long ago this technique became popular.

Thanks

Seals don't try to do a lot of surface swimming. U/W un-noticed is best. Using SDV's is much faster.

Any knind of swimming is good endurance training, use the stroke that you like best. Keep ya head in the water as it will slow ya down the most. Confidence in your ability while swimming will be your best bet.
