View Full Version : ammo with shelf life???
While dining at a local restuarant tonight, A North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper stated that the gummit is working on a powder formula that has a shelf life on approx 1 year. Have any of the Brain Trust contained here heard of this?
I guess the brass, primer, and projectile would still be of use for reloading.
Is there any merit to this line of thinking? How long would it take til the current supply runs out? If this is real, high cap magazines are not the only priority!!:faint::dunno:
must buy ammo
must buy ammo

is that even possible?
possible or not, its stupid. Like a screen door on a *******n submarine.
Complete falsehood.
This hoax idea has been floating around for years.
Why would they spend money on that, when they already have developed
"Lead Free" primers. The primers have a shelf life of approx. 10 years.
Plus you can sell them to everyone as being environmentally sound, and have them happy to buy them. You know protecting them from lead exposure and everything.
Does that mean that we should fire a few "test" rounds at the bad guy?

Right- because all LEOs and military personnel will change out their ammo yearly, and keep track of how old all of their ammo is. I guess this would boost sales for ammunition manufacturers if their product was more "perishable." Sounds to me like the rumor mill just kicked on when you were there.
I date my ammo boxes when I purchase them, but it's more for the sake of information and to make sure my ammo is being rotated when I use it.

Yea that would be great until one cop gets killed because they issued him old ammo or it expired early!! :(

Ive heard this a few times, i bought some Winchester 231 back 02 and the moron in the shop (thats the nicest thing i can call him - shop i rarely visit anymore)
Guy behind counter: This stuff now has an age-ing additive to it now, so eventually itll become inhert so you cant stockpile - its because of terrorism
Me: (sarcastically) Wow- so whats the additive?
Guy behind counter: ummmm..... i dunno but its true
Me: Right...... so how long is it good for?
Guy behind counter: No more than 5 years
Me:(trying not to laugh) k no worries
Its now 2008 (six years later) ive still got about 40 of those rounds still loaded up - and guess what?? they still work! wow! wonder if i should go back there and ask if hes willing to stand in front of my 17 as i pull the trigger. Your copper friend - im sorry to say is full of ****. Theres no way of 'desgining' powder to do that, how would it work? whats to stop it working before the '1 year' is up? Powder, all explosives are not the sort of thing you can actually alter the life of, not to mention the fact there very volatile, one additive they do put in there is a stabiliser - makes variations less due to weather extremes etc. Notice he didnt mention the primer? k..... so lets say the powder is inhert - uh oh! we forgot about the primer still working! bang, uh ok cycle another round and fire - how many lost fingers and eyes before the ammo companies close there doors? - If ammo companies were forced to do that - they would shut there doors first and demand compensation from the govt who would be busy trying to set up there own plants for LEO's. Its garbage - theres no way of altering powder to do that - so rest easy.
As for lead free primers - well, no one really knows yet but im thinking theyll be ok too - although ill trust normal primers more and avoid stock piling any non toxic primers. I have seen some federal non toxic 12gas over 10 years old that still went bang without a worry, so in short the closet thing theyll ever have to 'perishable' ammo is Lead Free primers and honestly - itll be a long time before well know exactly how long theyll last but to be on the safe side - keep em for practise, actually ive still got some non - toxic rounds that were made in 02 - there also still going bang. Id just laugh off anything you hear like that again, remember in the early 90's we heard about 'microchips' in primers? cmon have a laugh - think rationally and buy some more ammo anyway.
