Man accidentally kills himself while trying to rob a Grand Prairie home
03:17 PM CDT on Wednesday, June 18, 2008
By DAN X. McGRAW / The Dallas Morning News

A 19-year-old man accidentally shot and killed himself Tuesday morning while he was attempting to rob a Grand Prairie home, authorities said.
Cameron Sands, 19, of Fort Worth kicked in the door of the house and then shot himself in the stomach as he pulled a gun out of his pants to shoot the homeowner, Grand Prairie police said. The homeowner was not injured.
After Mr. Sands shot himself, he dropped the gun and ran out of the home. Police found his body around 5:30 a.m. in the driveway of the home in the 2800 block Garden Grove Road, said Lt. John Brimmer, a Grand Prairie police spokesman.
“This is the first that I’ve heard of a robbery suspect killing himself as he is drawing a gun out of his waist band,” Lt. Brimmer said. “The criminal evidence points to that. It certainly isn’t common.”
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has ruled the death an accident.
Ya gotta wonder what the homeowner was thinking when this went down.
Surprise
Fear/panic
Hilarity
If this were to happen at my house, I could see myself standing over the moron in the driveway asking him, "Now what have we learned?"

Always use a holster
Just a thought, ya suppose the homeowner could sue this idiot's family for damages to his driveway? That's gotta leave a stain, right?
Or ya suppose he turned the hose on him before the cops got there?

Future Darwin Award Winner?
No doubt about it: He's a contender! :number1:
Clip draw anyone?
HA! Yeah, no doubt.....
I would call this a case of instant Karma! Instant justice.
Yes, I am HAPPY to hear about this. This IS what should happen to criminals. Why?
Because DEATH is the surest way to insure they DO NOT re-offend. Period.

im sure his family will be on the news tomorrow talking about how he was a great kid, and due to Bush and the economy, he had to turn to crime.
Why they called it an accident? Justice was served.

Kind of re-defines the term "Dumb Luck"!
The bullet probably severed a major artery and he bled out fast.
If he didn't breed before dying, then he is indeed a "Darwin" candidate.

I suppose that death by stupidity wasn't an option?

This a feel good story if I ever saw one.
Maybe the county could give him a posthumous public service award too.
That was most unfortunate..

yeah this guy is an idiot but the most alarming thing is this is the second time in less then a month I've heard of gun crime in my city. Its normally pretty quite around Grand Prairie, but we had a shooting at the Y a couple of weeks ago and now this... I'm glad I carry

Why they called it an accident? Justice was served.
The medical examiner or coroner has these choices for the Manner of death, which is itself an opinion.
Pending investigation, Suicide, Natural, Accidental*, Homicide, Undedermined.
Accidental usually gets you double the money on life insurance. But obviosly, the other options don't really fit.
Fun is trying to determine things like If 1 junkie asks another junkie to shoot them up resulting in a fatal OD when they are both too stoned to know whats going on. Homicide? Suicide? Accident? Pending investigation?
The downside to Mexican Carry.....
I guess it just proves that occasionally a criminal might do the right thing.
Ya gotta wonder what the homeowner was thinking when this went down.

The Downside To Keeping Your Finger Inside The Trigger Guard When You Are Not Ready To Shoot....

Folks that carry with a gun jammed in their pocket, waistband, or diaper holster are begging for difficulty. A proper OWB, or for rare occasions, IWB holster is a minimum.
You guys are making a big assumption that a holster would have helped. If this guy pulled the trigger with his finger, then a holster has little, if anything to do with it.
inst this the kinda guy we want to not use a holster and shoot himself?
I'd think he should get a pat on the back!

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
I would have loved to have seen the homeowner.
I can imagine it playing out something like this:
As the robber kicks in the door, the man of the household flies to his feet while his wife screams out of sheer surprise. The robber enters the doorway, the husband squares up to him, and, in horror, watches as the robber reaches into his waist band to draw his gun. *BANG* The robber accidentally squeezes the trigger while drawing, drops the weapon, and stumbles out of the doorway and down the street. As the husband, having moved to the front door, watches the would-be criminal nearly collapsing as he does his best to escape, the husband, glancing at his wife, asks the question any reasonable person would ask: "Am I on Candid Camera?"

I live in Grand Prairie and this is the first I've heard of this. But then, I don't watch the local news that much. I did hear about the shooting at the Y. Someone should send the article to Jay Leno for Headlines. He loves stupid criminals.

I just pictured a guy sitting in his lazy boy watching TV and drinking a beer. Door flies open and the homeowner turns his head just in time to see the teen shoot himself and fall to the floor.
....takes a drink of his beer.
....watches tv some more.
