View Full Version : .40 Cal Advantage/Disadvantage
What is the advantage or disadvantage to using a .40cal round designated "for short barrel usage" in a standard G23 barrel of 4" length or another barrel being 5" (full size model handgun)? Would velocity be lost? What's the deal?:dunno:

ANything designated 'short barrel' is likely loaded with a faster powder and lighter bullet...
No probelm at all using them in 4,5,6" guns! (Who complains about a little more velocity and a little more expansion, unless 12" of penetration in denim clothed gelatin is a strict religious issue for some...
12.1"....awesome round!!!
11.95"---failure! Unacceptable!

Not necessarily. The SPeer GDSB loads are using a bullet w/ larger HP for sure expansion @ reduced vel. of shrot bbls. Fired in longer bbls. you will get greater/faster expansion & rduced penetration. Is that good ro bad? Depends on what you are trying to achieve.
I don't think there is any disadvantage to using a short barrel load in a 4" barrel, it isn't all that much greater length than the 27 has. See fred's post, slightly faster expansion and probably slightly less penetration, with the Gold Dot I don't think it would be too shallow though. Should be totally fine.
