View Full Version : general concensus: 9mm w/ 4" barrel, non +p, what weight HP's?

here's my kicker: I got out of my comfort zone which was a Beretta 92FS w/ 5" barrel & Winchester 147gr jhp's to trade on a Glock 23 that turned out to be a bad decision for me due to the lack of training on Glock platforms; I saw a chance to correct this & was able to obtain a Ruger P95 in 9mm in one purchase while selling the glock helped pay for other firearms projects; the Ruger has a 4" barrel and I started asking around & doing research about optimal bullet weight for 4" barreled guns; I have nothing against +p loads, just don't want the extra muzzle blast & audible report inside the house or vehicle; given the following stuff:
reliable functioning, good combat accuracy, double taps/triple taps, non +p; modern/proven jhp loads...
what gives best balance of penetration & expansion from a 4" barrel? :faint: :shocked:

147 grain. the heavy bullets penetrate better. simple as that.
a tiny bit less energy, generally, for the tradeoff to improved penetration.
deep holes ain't wrong.

Factory ballistic data I've seen always uses a 4" barrel for 9mm, kinda like they always use a 5" barrel for .45 ACP.
If I were going to load my G19 (with a 4" barrel) for defense, I'd use Federal HST 147-grain ammo.
If you are going non +P then 147 Winchester or HST will do you fine.
We used to be issued Winchester Silvertip 115 grain standard pressure ammo on duty... Its an OK round but in a non +P the modern 147's seem to offer more (except speed).

147gr., as long as they function flawlessly in your handgun. Besides reliability, penetration is what you look for in a SD handgun/cartridge combo. Btw, most 147gr. rounds get good expansion also, if you look at ballistics, 9mm HPs seem to expand to about the same diameter as the .40S&Ws expand.
Let me get this straight--you traded in a Glock 23 for a Ruger P95 ??
:rofl: :animlol:
sorry, i have nothing to contribute to this thread. You may want to check out some Extreme Shock or RBCS ammo for your new aquisition :animlol:
147 HST is what I have in my CZ-75D PCR (3.9")

my turn...you opened the can, now I'll empty it!!!!!!!!!!! :steamed:
I have 7 other firearms in the collection, several of them needing mechanical attention; one rifle needing repaired to function, one shotgun needing repaired to function, one rifle needing polishing inside the receiver to feed smoother, another rifle needing a trigger job so I can improve my accuracy; I also have a revolver that is getting a spring kit installed to smooth up the trigger; I have a second revolver that will get a trigger massage to make her run smoother; another rifle just got new optics for the upcoming deer season;
guess what bub?!? all those firearms are KEEPERS and are being treated, maintained/repaired, or upgraded accordingly & that costs $$$$
I sold the Glock I couldn't shoot worth a damn to help pay for all that work; instead of dumping hundreds into ammo on a gun that was a marginal purchase to begin with, I opted to part with it & reinvest the money!!! :steamed: getting the Ruger for a nice price on a separate purchase was a suprise & gave me a platform similar to the one I trained with in the military & I honed my semiautomatic shooting skills with...got a problem with that?!? I don't...:cool::supergrin::tongueout:
now, back to the reason for my inquiry; thank you for your answers thus far concerning ammo choices; I already tested Hornady XTP 147gr jhp's & picked up some Federal HydraShok 124gr jhp's & Remington Golden Sabre 147gr jhhp's to test, but I've been getting bombarded with a bunch of different feedback & didn't know which way to go with it; I've been a fan of slow-n-heavy in 9mm, .38 spl +p, .357 mag, .44 mag, but have always used longer barreled guns with the exception of my CCW snubby;

I shot Standard Pressure Win 115 STHP's for years....I just changed to the REM 124 +P Golden Saber & I have to say I don't really feel any difference...if there is it's very minimal.
By the way my Son lives right outside Palmyra on 117....I go through Hershey every Friday picking my Granddaughter up....I live in Camp Hill....

I like the 124-grain JHP rounds; any quality ammo maker like Federal or Remington

MY G19 works really well with the Remington golden saber hollowpoints, 147 grain. I've never had a problem with them feeding or ejecting and they penetrate to 14.5" in ballistics gelatin and expand to .62" very consistently. The recoil does not feel much heavier than 115 grain FMJ.

Nooo.. No problem at all
All those firearm problems and you sold your Glock?? Hmm...mmmk..curious choice of actions.
What military handgun, 'the one you trained with', is similar to a P95??
Load your "Ruger" :upeyes: with 147gr Golden Sabers and sleep well

Although Rugers are fine firearms, the GLock 23 is a classic around here! (Rugers are generally very reliable, and built like tanks! I fired a friend's polymer framed .45 ACP, and although it is fine, the long DA pull felt like about 17-18 lbs, in all truthfullness)
To the 1911 fans, would be like trading a Colt WW1 repro for a Auto Ordnance!
Or trading a 1963 spilt Window Vette for...a 1985 Mustang!
No offense meant! People love Glocks! Rugers are for shooting too!
Enjoy it! And good luck!
