View Full Version : Academy and Ammo
So I'm in Academy tonight and I'm looking across the counter at a supply of Federal Premium Hydra-Shoks. The guy behind the counter comes over and stands right in front of Hydra-Shoks. I ask him what he has in the way of 9mm hollow points.
He looks at me like I had asked him to dance naked on the counter.
"Hollow points?," he says. "I don't think we have anything in hollow points."
He starts looking through the boxes shaking his head, "No. No. Don't see anything."
I say, "What about those Hydra-Shoks," which he was standing right next to. He says, "Those are really more than hollow points. They're different. They spread out more." He pulls one out and shows it to me. I've used them before. I know what they look like. I was just hoping they had something else to choose from.
I decide to get a couple of boxes and get out of there before I smarted off to the guy. I like Academy, but I seem to get into the same bone-headed conversations every time I go in. Some retired guy failing miserably to prove he's a gun expert.
Also, this time he did not escort me to the front checkout counter. He just handed me the boxes and sent me on my merry way.

What can you say? The only way to get anything resembling decent service in my area is to go to the local small gun store where the two old guys have sold guns behind the same counter for about 40 years. Ammo prices are high, gun prices arent great, but they at least know what they are talking about, and they also do some gunsmithing on the side. If you need some advice they give it without sounding like *******s and dont offer their knowledge when you dont ask for it.

I'm not so enthosed with Academy recently. Tried to buy a gun, on display. I had already looked at it previously and was going to buy it. Naturally, I'm short on time that day and a new hire had to be educated, in making a gun sale. He started out on the background check. Got that stopped since I had a CHL. It took at least an hour to get the escort to a checkout stand. They scanned it and got some sort of rejection. The computer said it didn't exist or something. After going through 3 levels of management, I had been there about 11/2 hrs, I had a prearranged meeting to be someplace else. I told the manager to just put it in the safe and I would come by later. I did get a chance to go back later, considerably later. I asked if the checkout was working. It was so I go to sporting goods and those yo-yo's had put it back on display and torn up all the previous paperwork. I must have wanted that gun mighty bad to have put up with such treatment.
They had a Taurus (copy of beretta 92) with high polish S/S, some of the small stuff gold plate and white pearl grips. I inquired about their "pimp" pistol. They didn't seem to want to discuss it. It looked like something out of a 1950's pawn shop. Anyhow, I'm not especially interested in going back soon.

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. It all depends on who is available to hire and how well trained they are. I work the hunting/fishing dept. at Academy, and being a shooter for over 30 years, I assure you I know what Hydra Shoks are. There's always someone who thinks they know it all but don't know Jack. We have one like that and I regularly correct him in front of customers as I don't want the customer getting bad info from us. I won't hesitate to say "I don't know" and then get on the internet or call the gun/pro shop that I personally use for an answer. Come to Texas, I'll help ya:wavey:

I also visited Academy last weekend to purchase some 9mm rounds, nothing fancy just some range bullets. I stood at the counter for almost 20 minutes before someone finally showed up and helped me to a box. I also walked out of the store in disgust. I later found out that my local Wal Mart has the same rounds for a lot less so I will be buying them there from now on.

Which store are you at?? I'll go there.:wavey:
I hate it when people pee down your back and tell you it's raining. A lot of folks that work in those store don't know as much as they think they do. It pays to do your homework before hand and sometimes just sometimes you can edumacate those folks if they'll listen:cool:

The Academy near me has 1 really good guy behind the counter, the others don't act like they enjoy their jobs too much.
I'd gladly take their place considering the job I have now working in a non air conditioned building with no hot females running around like the ones I always see in Academy. Some people don't know how good they have it.
