12ga slugs used by BGs to gain entry

This week a few BGs shot a 12ga slug through 3 barriers(front door,living room and bed room wall) and injured someone.

I am writing this in shock because I did not think your everyday street hood was even aware of the shotgun and especially the slug.

Please read the story and link below and you will see what I mean.

So now I have to ad another precaution in my HD scenario because maybe hoods have discovered just how inexpensive and devastating and shotgun slug combo is.

Not to mention buying a shotty is easier to purchase than a AK47 and will give similar penetration.

I bought 12ga slugs over a year ago just in case of emergencies but I never thought the street thug would get wind of this platform.

When I first heard the report early in one day the injured man was in critical condition but looks like he will be ok.

Yes I will answer my front door differently from now on.

Police say a man is in the hospital, after he opened his door to find a group of men pointing a shotgun at him.

According to officers, it was around 11:30 p.m. Thursday when the man answered his door at the Hidden Lake Apartments on the northwest side.

Police say two or three men were outside, threatening to shoot the man.

The man forced his door shut and ran into a back bedroom to hide. However, he still wasn't safe from the shooters.

"Apparently, one of the (suspects) outside fired a 12-gauge shotgun with a slug through the door," said Cpt. Cris Andersen of SAPD. "It passed through the living room, through a bedroom wall and apparently struck the complainant in the left hip as he entered the bedroom."

The victim was rushed to University Hospital in fair condition.

Police say they don't believe the shooting was a robbery attempt. They say the men probably knew each other.

Officers say they're looking for two or three Hispanic men. One is described as being heavy-set. They drove off in a white car.

Most criminals are very aware of the shotgun.

Not as many know about slugs, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist.

How would they not know about shotguns and slugs? What, do you think that knowledge is only for folks who are into firearms for non illegal uses??

I admit that I am not an expert on the criminal mind or their practices. Just going by my memory of the evening news over the past decades.

I can recall countless criminal shooting involving handguns of all calibers including the .50 magnum. Of course the AK47 and Tech nine and a few others.

But I do not remember a BG using a 12ga slug in his tactics to penetrate walls after a specific target.

I'm sure there are a some out there but not compared to say drive-byes using .357 magnums or handguns.

The lesson for me here is for me not to underestimate the ever evolving criminal that walks among us.

The one shooting that was a very definite single shot stop I can remember going to (after the fact) was a gang on gang shooting, 12ga slug at muzzle contact distance from a sawed off. Pretty much vaporized his chest, shot #2 was mostly reflex.

Well thats your first mistake. The evening news is a lousy source of information on crime and firearms. Criminals have been familiar with shotguns since the dern thing was invented

A 12 gauge is one of the most devastating fireams. Even today. They are highly effective in every urban scenario imaginable. The right shotgun is probably my #1 choice for personal defense firearm for urban operations.

Very good point 454ThunderGod. By design my handle is NuBee, not expert so I am humbly learning new things all the time.

I just never envisioned some national media czar that was miraculously able to filter all BG and shotgun stories and allow countless handgun shootings to slip through.

I went and looked at NRA magazine articles (the armed citizen) and could find too many accounts of BGs using handguns or Uzi s or AKs but RELATIVELY speaking not nearly as many using a shotgun with slugs.

I also took a good look at the 2 great sites listed below that I take a gander once and a while. These are real people in real gun related attacks.

Bottom line for me is that I need to be mentally prepared for just about any kind of BG weapon or tactic.

i think maybe it's your area, or maybe not. i grew up in satx and i grew up with all kinds of guns, m1 carbine, 03s, rifles, pistols, etc. strangely the shotgun was absent from my collection, even as teenager. the shotgun was for hunting ducks or shooting clays. you never heard much about it, outside the sawed off shotgun of course. i'm pretty sure they were definitely around and often used, but for whatever reason, you are correct, nobody really talked about them. the shotgun was that big gun in the police car rack, that's about it. the gangs and criminals had rifles and machineguns. after all, it ain't easy to drive by with a shotgun or pistol, you really need a rifle if you're going to do it right.

today, my mossberg marine 590 shotgun with brenneke slugs is among the best single weapon i own.

But, seriously, I can't imagine anyone not knowing about it. And, honestly, you think that there aren't criminals that, on their off time, do some hunting?

I was living in Southern Kalifornia when Patrick Purdy took out those seven children on a Stockton playgroung with the AK-47 in 89'. I can tell you that when the Kali ban was enacted in 90', it didn't take gang members long to figure out the "cheap" effectiveness of the shotgun. They were probably wondering why they had been overlooking it all those years previous.
