View Full Version : Baby's first range target
See my 'So you've never fired a CF pistol' post for meaningful background...
25 yards, strong, gusty winds. 2-handed grip, standing.
With old eyes, the target was pretty clear, but the sights were blurry. I couldn't see the bullet holes without binocs.
I tried to hold directly on the center dot.
Half was WWB 115gr ball, 5 were Cor Bon +P HP, the other half was Speer GD 127gr HP.
I'm really surprised by the amount of vertical coverage. And the lower-right flyer. Trigger control wasn't great, although I think I didn't snatch any. The adrenaline was flowing really good for the first 20 shots! I don't flinch...

Focus on the front sight...
Dude, that's TWO stupid replies to my posts.
I don't mind funny, and I love intelligent sarcasm. You've got neither.
And for the lurkers, I wear bifocals, as implied above. I guess 1/3dgen's memory only covers the last 10 words read. (Or maybe his audio memory is bad, and mommy read too fast? :devildance:)
25 yards might of been a little to far for a day like that. The wind could of very well been effecting the bullets trajectory also.

I took a friend to the range today and he was doing the same thing yo uare doing, You are pulling the trigger to your left, you need to have a firm grip on it to ensure that you are having the right form.
and control your breathing..

shoot slower. think about it some, and mebbe use better hearing protection? whatever it takes to give you more control. you *are* pulling the shots left, slow down, use a spotter (helper) and STOP THAT.
Standing. 75 feet.
That is pretty good shooting.
Yup your puling the shot left.. Focus on the front sight not the target.Front sight clear,Target fuzzy..More dry fire practice as well..Dont worry you'll get it.

Focus on the front sight, dummy. Or get another set of glasses.

Target should indeed be fuzzy out of focus; and the front sight, "crystal clear", to quote Todd Jarrett

Are you talking about having the trigger pressed just to the point of firing again?
My club's rules are 5 seconds between shots...

I'm excited just THINKING about how much fun I had today!
After you fire the first shot hold the trigger to the rear. Only release till you feel it click. That is the trigger reset. When your ready to fire again press the trigger and hold to the rear.Again only release till you feel the click.

Great advise on the muffs! Thanks!
I'm thinking of videoing my next shoot.
I have to *practice* until I get it right, yes?!!!! YeHaaaa!

I'm lucky I guess cause all the ranges I go to in Florida have no wait time between rounds thats crazy. Plus thats gotta get so damn annoying after a while when you just wanna pop off a mag real quick at the end of your range session.:wow:

When you pull the trigger and the gun fires, hold the trigger back and let it out slowly(till you get the feel), as you let it out you will feel a click, that is the trigger reseting. That is as far as you need to go. As you practice it, it will help with your trigger control. If I understood your question, hope that helps.

I thought about getting shooting glasses, so the sights are in focus, but I'd only wear them at the range. No good when the BG's come... :=(
I'm real close to shooting perfect scores while watching tv! Wife's pissed...

Hey, BG, please wait until I put on my shooting glasses... :whistling:
While I'm at it, I'll just shoot .22, to save on costs. Hell, I'll just shoot airguns, then I can watch home & garden tv while I'm at it.
Sheet! Can't I just point my finger and go "kB!"? :faint:
Seriously-we want to shoot exactly like we expect to NEED to shoot, right? If I were shooting competition, I'd agree with you, but then I'd be shooting a range-specific gun.
And I appologize to those who didn't assume I was practicing for HD, cause I just didn't think to say so.

Does this help keep the grip constant?

I agree, and I'm gonna NEED to quick-fire at the BG, so not being able to practice that is a big deal to me.
I wonder how many pounds of fiberglass it'd take to soundproof the basement?
If eyesight is the issue in regards to not being able to focus on the front sight.I suggest you check out Dr.Middlebrooks FistFire system.Heres the link.

Clem, do you recommend this type of target?
Nice, but what's with the weird off-center marks in the bullseyes? Printer error?

they work well for shooting precisely. but if thats not your bag...
Good shooting.
Switching gears, I believe a rear sight tool will fix your rounds going to the left. I've fired many different G17's and about 9 out of 10 shoot 4-6" left at 25 yards.

I'm a LEO firearms instructor in a department where Glocks are the issued sidearm. Many of those who shoot Glocks tend to shoot low and to the left of their intended point of impact. The sear reset mentioned earlier is one way of gaining trigger control; allowing you the opportunity to regain sight picture without "slapping" the trigger for the next shot. If you're right-handed, "slapping" the trigger will cause you to pull to the left. Another thing you can do to minimize the pull to the left is to ensure that you are using the proper finger placement on the trigger. The first pad of the index finger should be used to pull the trigger. If you have the first joint of the index finger on the trigger, you have too much finger involved and will pull to the left for a right-handed shooter. Good luck.
Good shooting.

Would that rear sight tool look like a screwdriver and hammer? :whistling:

I think the only time I yanked the trigger resulted in the lower right flyer... And I definitely was using the pad of my index finger, having shot that way with my .22 many decades ago, and having also read it here.
I had to count to 5 to meet the ranges' firing rules, and aside from some 'grittiness' in the trigger travel, I'm fine with a slow squeeze.
The only other question I have is that I'm only comfortable with crossing my left thumb over the top of my right thumb. I find the thumbs side-by-side to be extremely uncomfortable, and it reduces my grip pressure substantially. (I am using handshake pressure at this time...).
I *did* notice that the sights landed right back on target after recoil... If I were doing 'bad' things with trigger/grip, would that be true?

Does 'precisely' taste anything like chicken? You must need an awful lot of them to make a meal!
Dont mess with the rear sight till you know your pressing the trigger the right way.If your sights are adjusted right and the problem is with your trigger control then you will be masking a problem by moveing the rear sight.Give it some time and dry practice alot.Make sure you have no ammo in your practice area.Make sure you only dry practice in one area of your home and no where else.Never allow ammo in the dry practice area..EVER!
