I shoot my G17 a couple of times a week at the shooting range, and I shoot at least 300 rds each time. I clean my GLOCK after each time at the range. Am I overdoing it, or what..? Am I a total nerd? I love shooting my GLOCK and I love cleaning my G.

I clean my guns after every trip to the range even after 100 rounds. Glock does recommend you clean it after firing it. I guess there are many nerds on this board because I have heard many say they do the same thing. Just have fun.

Thanks. Nice to hear that we practice the same thing. I like having a clean and functional gun. ;-)

Shooting several times a week, even 9mm, gets expensive; so, you must be a rich gun nerd. Are you looking to adopt? FWIW, shoot--clean (repeat)

If you take care of your Glock (or H&K, or SIG, etc.) , you're Glock will take care of you.

Just 'cause people say you don't have to clean your gun after every range trip doesn't mean that you shouldn't.

:agree:

Up here that would be, with the cheap factory loads at least $75.00 per range trip. God I wish I could do that.

I've cleaned guns after firing 2 rounds. I spent some time at the range this afternoon, and the two guns I took have already been cleaned.

Now I know I'm not alone.....I clean my guns if I shoot 5 rounds or 5,000 rounds through them.

By cleaning it you get to observe any changes, unusual wear, if and how different ammo is treating your gun, etc. I'd say it's necessary to know what you're doing rather than just being like some people who think gas is the only thing a vehicle needs, and then wonders why it breaks down.

That's very very correct, Sir!

You want to see what ammo leaves copper in your barrel, if it's sooting it up a lot, you might even catch shreds of metal or a slight crack on the slide, a whole slew of things that you wouldn't know and might come up to bite you in the behind when you actually need the gun. You don't need it to jam, stovepipe, slide break up, or any of that when in a self defense situation.

Any time, sir. Gun cleaning must be paired with inspection. It's even better if you learn to detail strip your gun, it's a superior cleaning and inspection procedure. Good luck!

I clean after every range trip as well, but sometimes I don't get to it for a day or two, so I recently picked up a couple BoreSnakes so I can at least run that through the barrel a couple times as soon as I'm finished shooting.

I generally clean my guns after every range session, the only excpetion being my Glocks SOME of the time. If I go shoot 100 rounds or so and need to get somewhere, back in the holster she goes. Take care of your guns and they will take care of you.

In fact, I was reading an article in one of the big gun rags this weekend and a highly decorated gun writer noted how he rarely cleans his guns. Geesh.

You guys are nuts, but probably in a good way.

My blue and shiney guns get cleaned each time I shoot them. The beat up old black plastic guns rarely get cleaned.

My G26 gets a couple hundred rounds pushed through each week (sometimes more, never less) and got it's first real cleaning a few weeks ago in the past 4 or 5 years. I just enver saw a real reason to.

Don't get me wrong, I've hosed off the mud a few times and even soaked it in the parts washer after a good hydraulic bath once, but that's about it.

I know a lot of folks that shoot Glocks (a lot) and rarely clean them and have never heard of anyone having an issue because of a dirty Glock.

My only thought would be to use a nylon brush on the guts and bore. If you use a bronze brush in your bore... you can actually clean it too much. I don't know if Glock barrels are Chrome lined but it can be especially rough on Chrome to clean over and over and over again. But even a non-Chrome lined barrel can start to see some wear. And if you use cleaners with amonia... and clean like three times a week... I'd definately use a nylon brush in the bore. I basically clean my Glock when I notice it's groups starting to open up. Then I know that polygonal bore is getting a little too dirty. But this doesn't really become noticable (To me anyway) until about 1000 rounds. Then it starts shooting a little sloppy. I've put about 1,800 rounds through my new G34 and I've only cleaned it twice. Both times it was because it started shooting a little sloppy. After a good cleaning... it tightened back up.

It's a good idea to run around town with a pistol barrel devoid of recent powder deposits.

All the other good kids (Glocks) go thousands of rounds before cleaning. Only thing I have had break in almost 15 years of Glocking is the trigger bar spring, and the pistol is still fully functional with this spring broken...

Glocks aren't 1911 pistols. And, who knows how many pistols go *bad* every year due to over cleaning... (grin)

It's a horrible addiction. I spend more time cleaning the thing than shooting it. I don't even think Glocks need that much attention, but I'd hate to be the guy that has to say "if only I'd cleaned my gun that night..."

But it really does get a little annoying especially trying to get under the extractor, where oil isn't supposed to go and the slide rails. I don't even know how to clean the unitary spring -- that's a pain in the a**.

I gets annoying spending like an hour and a half cleaning for every session at that range, but yeah... I'm with you... I do it too.

I know the reputation Glock pistols have regarding running when dirty. Typically, I clean my pistols after each range visit. I've gone a few hundred rounds w/o a cleaning, took them to the range and things we're fine...but it's a good habit to get in to,cleaning them after each visit to the range.

I usually wipe them down with a paper towel a short time after they've been cooled off...then take them down and either use Brake Free CLP, or Hoppe's 9.

I'm just curious... what is it that you think can happen if you don't clean your gun?

I don't think the Glock would have any problem especially from the fouling of only a few range visits, but I would suck it the gun didn't go "bang" when I needed it too.

If I only shoot one gun at the range, I'll clean it as soon as I get home whether I shoot 1 round or 300 rounds.

If I bring two guns to the range, I'll clean one asap and clean the other within a few days.

I have not cleaned a Glock in about three months, and combined, I've shot 5-7k rounds thru 8-12 Glocks in that time.

My carry gun has been cleaned once in the past 6 months. I shoot two mags thru it each month.

I go to the range 2-3 times a week so I clean my Glock every 100-300 rounds. Really depends on how many round I fire each day. If I only shoot 50 rounds I will wait til next time to clean it...

btwiceborn
06-23-2008, 09:58
i only make it to the range about 2 times a month. i shoot between 2 and 400 rounds when i go. ( i know i need to shoot more!!)
i usually take two guns with me but rarely the same two each time. i havent cleaned a glock this year. i have two glocks that i never cleaned from the factory that each have about 1000 rounds thru them. (i know, this is supposedly bad). i guess i am just a lazy slob. one thing i do right, is maintenance on my carry gun.
i shoot the insertaed mag and the backup mag each time i go to the range, and i will wipe down or clean it that day.

Thx-1138
06-23-2008, 10:17
I'll clean my gun after a range trip, but I'm in no hurry. My carry gun will get reloaded with JHP and go back in it's holster before I go off the range, and stay there until I have a chance to clean it... maybe the next day, maybe a week later. I make it to the range once every couple of months.

Between range trips, I'll unload my carry gun and blow the lint out of the backchannel and barrel if I haven't cleaned it in a while.

I know I don't need to clean it that often, but it's enjoyable, and it gives me a chance to get a better understanding of the inner workings of it.

It's a Glock, not a museum piece.

I like to clean my Gs during football games, too, but NEVER when the New Orleans Saints - my hometown team - plays. If I had a gun in my hand I'd be too tempted to find a magazine and unload on the TV at the stupid SOB that ruled our receiver was out of bounds, or, in many games, to shoot myself. How clean I keep a gun depends on its end use. My carry guns are kept clean as are my "safe queens" that is guns only used occasionaly. My main IDPA gun is a Springfield 1911 .45 and it is fired 600-800 rds. a month and I only wipe it off and bore snake it between trips and clean it once a month. It does get dirty, but it always works just fine. My .22 plinking guns are only cleaned once or twice a year or if they start jamming from the crud. In my expierience taking a Ruger MarkII apart for cleaning puts more wear and tear on it than shooting it dirty. I do keep these hard use type guns lubed proprely and they run fine for many rounds between cleanings. YRMV
