View Full Version : Is 9mm replacing the 45acp?
Is 9mm gaining popularity with shooters if anything just due to cost of ammo?
I have had several friends switching over to 9mm from 45acp because they can shoot twice as much due to the rising cost of ammo, heck I'm not sure what is going up faster gas or ammo.
I see a reloading setup in my future.
Reloading will save you money however, even reloading supplies are going up.
9mm seems to be the only round where store prices are reasonable. Particually for practice ammo.
This economy will require changes in how and where people spend money (as salaries are the only thing not going up). And with the economy still sinking and rock bottom no where in sight and our flirtation with socialism and the soon to be higher taxes coming next year (read Obamastan) it will be a struggle. Hopefully things will change for the better but who can count on that?
AWMP, You are correct! I too went from .45 ACP to 9mm to compete in IDPA. It seems all ammo is going up so stock up now!

Same here, dropped from a .40. I now buy ammo in bulk with my dad.

My last four pistol purchases have been 9mm, but I don't see a trend happening.:wavey:

Among novice shooter, maybe. Serious shooters reload anyway & the cost diff. just isn't that great IMO.

Nah, never. I love both calibers, carry my 9mm mostly, due to cheaper practice and quicker follow up shots. Tactically, I'm much better with it, but I do love shooting that .45ACP, I just can't do it as much as I'd like due to the price of ammo.

I just traded a 9mm for a 45.The 9mm is good but it will never take the place of a good old 45.I still have too many 9mm handguns but my 45's are my babies:wavey:

For IPSC, I went from .45 to 9mm due to increases ammo costs. For CCW and home defense, I still prefer .40 S&W.
The Germans were thinking way forward when they adopted the 9mm. I was thinking of buying an STI Spartan for IDPA, but finally settled for a CZ 75B SA in 9mm.
The .45 ACP is good, especially in defense situations where you don't shoot a hundred rounds at any one time.

*I say yes. Most definitely. Especially with people who shoot frequently and/or do not reload.

* I think you have already started a trend.
Also my .22 lr's are seeing quite a bit of action. I hope 9mm will say at the current price though.

Replacing? No. Displacing? Yes. It's a good round.

I remember way back in 1995 when Winchester Q4172 was $9.99 a box. I can get in the car right now and go buy the same ammo for $9.97 a box. Back to the mid to late 90s when the market was flooded with cheap euro and former com bloc ammo and 9mm ammo could be bought for much less. Even today is cheap for the 9mm, we have just been spoiled for a long time.
Even a box of 147 SXTs was $12.99 for 20 rounds back in '95. I can go and buy a box of 147 Ranger T 14s for $21.99 for 50 rounds.
9mm is not all that bad yet. When Q4172 hits $15.00 a box I will start stomping my feet but still be happy that it is only marginaly more expensive than 1995 prices when you add in inflation............

Cheap definately attracts a following... and lower 9mm ammo prices have driven some folks switch. Money is money, and a budget is a budget.
As for me, I've stayed pretty much with what I'm most confident with, but still will shoot 9mm when I have to due to budget. It's been great to get good deals on .40sw stuff as some of those same folks make the change to 9mm. I've traded 9mm ammo a number of times for .40sw and that's a sweet deal for me.
I'd rather just shoot my .22lr. So, for plinking, I'll opt for my .22lr if I really want to shoot lots for cheap.
Reloading is the way to go if you want to shoot a serious caliber in high count, unless you have money to burn.

Since the cost of 9mm ammo has gone up so much, my .45 Glocks are "replacing" the 9mm ones. I reload .45.

I believe it is.....I never had the pleasure of the .45 in my collection.....but I have owned my share of 9mm's....and for the ammo price.......glad I do.
Gotta admit for factory practice ammo the 9mm is a lot better price. But I reload. There is a difference but just not all that much. I like to shoot my 9 but the 45's are what I like the most. Frankly I am amazed the 9mm is a popular as it is. My 17 is a great shooter though and with some loads is fairly powerful. Yet it will simply not replace the 45 to me. With as popular as the 9mm is, there must be lots of guys who disagree.
The pragmatic part of me wonders why the 40 and 10mm have not replaced the 9mm and the 45. I do not shoot any 40's or 10's but they seem to cover all the ground a semi can cover.
So... the 9mm has come a long way (I am having more fun with my 17 than expected) but neither scratches my big bore itch or satisifies my beliefs of what works for self defense. They will both survive.

I hear you, and with the current trend, .22lr will be replacing 9mm. :whistling:
The price for everything is going up. Not only did copper and brass prices increase to stupid levels, but ammo is heavy, and so shipping cost have increased.
